Tokyo, a city built on the coast, intertwined with water has put in place a flood system you’ll have to see to believe. On this episode we bring you Tokyo’s flood tunnels.
Global oceanic city Tokyo has so much water access including cancels and waterways within the city that a grand plan was put in place to protect the city from flooding. There are 8 rivers that run through Tokyo all capable of flooding during a typhoon.
In the 1950s - 1960s typhoons flooded and destroyed the low lying old downtown of Tokyo.
Based on Tokyo’s geographical location disaster in many forms can strike at any moment. Over 38 sq miles or 100 sq km of the city is below sea level which was made worse by rapid construction in the 1960s and 70s. Water was extracted causing the are around Koto-ku to sink further down 2.2 feet or 70 cm.
Tokyo’s annual rainfall of 60 inches or 1530 mm hasn’t changed that much over the years but the pattern in which the rain falls has. In recent decades that rain pours heavy and hard putting people’s homes at risk of flooding.
Over 80 years ago an artificial waterway was dug, walled with concrete and armed with gates to control the rate of flow away from east Tokyo. Overtime more gates were added but eventually Tokyo devised an idea to build an enormous structure underground to soak up typhoon flood water at outrageous volumes. This came after the 1991 catastrophic flood that submerged 30,000 homes and left dozens dead. 3 billion dollars and 13 years later the Metropolitan Outer Area Underground Discharge Channel was completed. 5 stories tall this massive chamber is so long it’s length is greater than the height of this building, Fountain Place in Dallas. Outfit with dozens of pillars, each one weighs in over 500 tons. As the rivers start to fill up water is diverted into this surge tank which will then be redirected to the man made river that exits the city. Being the largest of its kind in the world, this surge tank sees water fill up inside 7 to 12 times a year. How this is possible is a 3.7 mile or 6 km network of huge pipes all positioned to take in water when the flow is too high that carries it through the pipes back to the surge tank.

Did you know there is a specialized vehicle that can dig up and move trees with ease? On this episode we bring you the tree moving machine.
The 100 inch Truck Spade is a specialized truck designed to dig up and move trees. How the truck works, there are 4 blades that are wrapped around the tree, the doors are closed around it and the spades are plunged into the ground. They stagger the blades going into the ground then pull the tree right out. The spades and the tree are folded sideways onto the back of the truck at which it is transported to it’s new location. Once the tree is planted in it’s new location it should be staked and tied 2 directions to give it some stability. The soil of the new location should ideally be the same ph and have similar drainage as the old location. The transplanted tree will have a good chance of surviving if cared for properly but it isn’t certain. This is because a transplanted tree will have a lot of it’s smaller root structure cut off so there is some risk the tree won’t take to the new location.
Now you are probably wondering, what does it cost to move a tree? 8 - 12 foot trees range from $200 - $1200, typically transplanting trees cost $15 - $25 / foot. Now transplanting really old trees is possible as well big trees but can cost upwards of $50,000. If you could transplant any tree to where you live, what would it be? I’m going to go with yellow mangosteen tree as they can take up to 20 years to fruit. Let us know if you’ve ever seen a machine like this before, consider subscribing and until the next one have a good one.

Lurking in warm waters of the world are a large mammal with a vacuum like snout. On this episode of World’s Weirdest Animals, we bring you the dugong.
The dugong or sea cow as it’s also called is a large sea mammal being one of 4 living species of the order Sirenia, the other 3 species being manatees. Measuring up to 11 feet or 3.4 meters long and weighing in at 2000 lbs or 1 ton the Dugong while having flippers and a flat tail like a whale, are more closely related to an elephant. It is believed that elephant like creatures entered the water and eventually evolved into the dugong. A close but extinct relative to the dugong is the steller's sea cow. This aqua behemoth was multiple times larger than the dugong.
The dugong is more agile than you might think. This mammal can perform a neat trick when in shallow waters they can stand using their tail, poking their head above the water’s surface. They live in both groups and by their own, when grouped with others they’ll use a handful of unique sounds to communicate. These noises come in the form of squeaky chirps and barks.
Their large heavy bones keep them submerged underwater, while their lungs on their backs keep them in a horizontal alignment, ideal for swimming. Their swim speed is slow only 6 miles or 10 km/h at a normal pace. They are able to max out though at around 14 miles or 22 and ½ km /h.
The dugong reach sexual maturity between age 9 and 15. Between age 12 and 15 the dugong will develop tusks which are usually only visible on the males. Females will be pregnant for a full year before giving birth to their babies which happens every 3 to 7 years. A strong bond is created between the mother and baby which lasts 18 months before the calf is released on it’s own. Provided there is an ample food supply, the dugong will live up to 70 years old.

BlackFly
There is a new flying car is on the horizon, on this episode we cover the Blackfly flying car.
Officially launched, the blackfly by company Opener is a flying car for one. Boasting a 25 mile / 40 km range on it’s electric batteries this flying car can travel up to speeds of 62 mph / 100 km/h. It is said to eventually cost the same as an SUV but will debut at a higher price. Blackfly along with 2 other flying cars being developed are all backed by Google co-founder Larry Page.
Controlled by 8 propulsion systems across two wings each propeller each propeller can unleash a tremendous amount of force. While looking heavy, the blackfly is so light it fits into the ultralight flying vehicle category, a category that restricts these aircraft from flying at night and above urban population. Opener has been testing this vehicle in Canada where they have had the green light from the aviation authority. With over a 1000 test flights already completed, the developers have flow Blackfly over 10,000 miles or 16,000 km autonomously before sticking a pilot inside. Looking like a difficult vehicle to maneuver, this vertical take off and landing vehicle flies similar to a drone that they claim it’ll take someone 5 minutes to learn to fly. For someone who gets lost while piloting it they can push a return to home button to get back to where they started.
Opener is hoping to start selling them in 2019, what do you think will 2019 be the year of cars flying overhead?
