Strauss Airstrip Runway Drive | Drone Kings in Darwin 4K [2020]
Strauss Airstrip Drone flight with the DJI Mavic Air | Drone Kings in Darwin
Strauss Airstrip, dating from 1942-45, is one of the last surviving and most intact World War Two pursuit fighter installations in northern Australia. It was also known as 27 Mile Field or Humpty Doo Strip.
An important strategic component of the Allied defence of northern Australia, Strauss played a pivotal role in the air war against Japan by providing a base for the use of P40 Kittyhawk and Spitfire fighter squadrons. Strauss was used by large numbers of American and British aircraft during the war, and has associations with Australia's engagement during the 20th Century in the crucial alliance with the United States and Great Britain. Artefacts at Strauss Airstrip represent significant elements of a wartime airstrip with the potential to contribute to an understanding of the role of the pursuit fighter squadrons in Darwin during World War Two, in addition to informing the lives of servicemen in a (then) remote theatre of war.
Constructed by sections of the United States Army 808th Engineer Aviation Battalion, they built a single runway of 5,000 ft × 100 ft (1,524 m × 30 m) wide with associated taxiways and dispersals.
The plaque was dedicated at the site of the 14th and 2nd Anti-Aircraft Batteries guns which fired on the Japanese when they attacked Darwin on the 19th February 1942. The plaque was erected by the people of Darwin and dedicated on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin in 1942.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The plaque reads:
Site of Number One gun of the Australian 14th Heavy
Anti Aircraft Battery base at what was known as the Oval.
The guns of the Australian 14th and 2nd Heavy Anti-Aircraft Batteries were the first army units to engage enemy forces attacking the Australian mainland when on 19th February 1942, 242 Japanese aircraft bombed and strafed Darwin township and its defences in two raids.
The Japanese attacked Darwin
and the Top End on 64 occasions
from 19th February 1942 to
12th November 1943.
Dedicated by the
citizens of Darwin
18th February 2002
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 14 Heavy Anti aircraft Battery was formed on 30 October 1940 in Sydney. 2 Anti aircraft Cadre was absorbed by 14 Anti aircraft Battery in September 1941. The Unit travelled to Darwin on the Zealandia in December 1940. They established the gun sites at Berrimah; McMillan's and Quarantine. This Unit was the first to fire on Japanese aircraft on Australian soil. They had two 20 hundredweight heavy anti aircraft guns at Elliot Point; four 3.7 inch guns at the Oval and another four at McMillan's and Fannie Bay.
The Bombing of Darwin, also known as the Battle of Darwin, on 19 February 1942 was the largest single attack ever mounted by a foreign power on Australia. On that day, 242 Japanese aircraft, in two separate raids, attacked the town, ships in Darwin's harbour and the town's two airfields in an attempt to prevent the Allies from using them as bases to contest the invasion of Timor and Java during World War II.
Darwin was lightly defended relative to the size of the attack, and the Japanese inflicted heavy losses upon Allied forces at little cost to themselves. The urban areas of Darwin also suffered some damage from the raids and there were a number of civilian casualties. More than half of Darwin's civilian population left the area permanently, before or immediately after the attack.
The two Japanese air raids were the first, and largest, of more than 100 air raids against Australia during 1942–43.
More bombs were dropped on Darwin (681 bombs weighing 114,100 kilograms (251,500 lb) by 205 bombers) than on Pearl Harbor (457 bombs [including 40 torpedoes]) weighing 133,560 kilograms (294,450 lb) by 273).

Airlie Beach is a coastal locality in the Whitsunday Region of Queensland, Australia.
The 74 Whitsunday Islands lie between the northeast coast of Queensland, Australia, and the Great Barrier Reef, a massive stretch of coral teeming with marine life. Most of the islands are uninhabited. They're characterized by dense rainforest, hiking trails and white sand beaches. The town of Airlie Beach on the mainland is the region's central hub.
The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 kilometres over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres. The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

Phantom 3 Standard fly by at Manton Dam, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia
Built in 1942, Manton Dam was Darwin's first reliable water supply.
Today the dam is a pleasant destination for an easy daytrip from Darwin, 70 kilometres south, and a popular recreation spot that is accessible year-round.
Manton Dam is a water sport enthusiast's paradise. Bring a powerboat and water skis and enjoy yourself in the powerboat and water ski zone. Canoeists, windsurfers and low-speed boaties can take an easier pace in the low speed zone. Pack a picnic and make the most of the day - there are tables and barbecues in shady spots (BYO wood from outside the park). Bring your fishing rod and try your luck - if it's a while between bites there are plenty of ducks and other wader species to spot while you enjoy a relaxing pause on the bank. Alongside the water species, birdwatchers will also be able to see many Eucalypt woodland birds, as this habitat is part of the shoreline in many places. Reptiles and mammals have also been recorded in this area and form a large part of the fauna list for the Dam and its environs.
