Shinchou Yuusha the overly cautious hero is ball bustingly funny. Deep belly laugh, roll on your arse hilarious. And as humour is matter of preference, for context my gag anime scale hits a 10 around shows like Gintama, Golden Boy and GTO. True comedy. Unless you are born with all your skill points stacked in charisma, being funny is genuinely hard. Your material needs to be palatable universitaly to as wide an audience as possible. Your rhythm, timing and delivery need to be on pace, or you will lose momentum and the punch line will fall flat. Alternatively you can pack all those in, and dial it back to a cheap looney-tune style slapstick gags. For low IQ guys like myself these land every time and I’m only slightly ashamed for appreciating this grotesquely low and shallow level of humour. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but in the Isekai denomination, Konosuba is the go-to for comedy. If you want tragedy and mmorpg style skill tree progression you watch Shield hero. Fancy routing for the bad guy, you could watch overlord. If you want a ground-hog day themed isekai you watch re: Zero, if you’re after something actually good there’s Hack Sign or Escaflowne, or if you’re chasing garbage you could try SAO. BUT why is Konosuba the default for isekai comedy? Is it actually funny, or is the bar just set a little too low? Well, both. Konosuba is harmless, assuming you’re into harem jokes with the occasional panty steal. The humour it uses plays it safe and at a minimum will keep half of your attention while you passively consume the show and may earn itself a chuckle every two episodes or so. But how are you going to compete with this: Let’s break it down. Konosuba’s best jokes are Aqua being consistently useless, girls in frogs mouths, the girls falsely accusing kazuma of lewding them, the cabbage barrage and Kazuma actually BIENG a pervert. Not bad, just...fine. And the scope of comedy available to the show feels intrinsically tied to the depth of Kazuma’s character, which is wafer thin. He is a NEET transported to another world. That’s it. No unique personality traits, skills or ANYTHING notable to differentiate him from the Joe average isekai protagonist. Unlike the overly Cautious hero. Being extremely ero is overdone and a tired trope. However being ridiculously cautious is apparently side-splittingly funny. Stocking up on equipment before heading out on a quest? Here’s why Rossiu was the true, people’s hero of Gurren Lagann. Because he's the hero the city deserves, but not the one it needs right now. As far as leaders go, Simon is absolute weak sauce. We quickly get a feel for the core foundations that were pounded into Rossiu as we trudge through his dismal world, but what I think was the most impactful moment from his introduction is Rossiu learning that leader Magin sacrificed his mother for the good of the village. To meet that quota of a 50 maximum populace. THUGGG. I would have beat village leader Magin to death right then and there. In fact, all though he first seemed to denounce violence, we saw Rossiu take up arms to challenge Kamina in what he believed to be an effort to protect his village. So Rossius' decision here not to bludgeon the village leader to death, symbolises him accepting rationale and the utilitarian thought machine, and that having his mother executed, though not so great for Rossiu, was for the betterment of society. So they could, well not thrive, but survive. Even Rossiu offering to leave with Gimmy and Darry, is a calculated gain for the village. One less mouth to feed, and as he is likely unskilled, and an unmatured person that probably can’t pull his weight as the other adults can when it comes to labour, him leaving should be a net benefit for their society.
