Madeira Vine Tubers & Leaves Harvest – Better than Spinach?
Madeira Vine is a frost tender perennial climber producing masses of edible pleasantly flavoured leaves that are a really good spinach substitute. It also produces edible tubers that have a mucilaginous texture, this characteristic is lost when roasted. It's quite ornamental with it's thick heart shaped leaves and white flowers in autumn. We have been growing it in our greenhouse and we've been harvesting leaves right up to the first hard frost in early December. We planted right in the center of the greenhouse and we like to take a nibble when walking by. These plants take up a tiny amount of space whilst producing a considerable amount of food. They should do fine outdoors too, which we will try in the next growing season. It forms a ball of 3-5cm long tubers just beneath the surface of the soil which makes for easy harvesting. Harvest video below.

The growing season is slowly but steadily coming to an end and while we're enjoying the last breath of the Summer along with the plants in the garden, we are preparing for Winter. We are preserving the many bounties of the garden by drying, canning and fermenting. We've always had a keen interest in homesteading with all it's almost forgotten skills that can be learnt with it.
These are making a come back as people realize that there's another way and a better quality of life to be had. We started using our pressure canner, made some more country wine and bottled a 4 year old elderflower wine. We're also showing you the corn, pumpkins and grapes growing in the garden. The elephant garlic and Oerprei are now dry and ready for storage.

The importance of repotting plants:
Give plants room to expand their roots and grow
Prevent them from becoming pot bound (circling and entangled roots)
Fresh soil and nutrients for plant vitality
A bigger pot holds more soil - more soil holds more water - less frequent watering required
Mulching (for example using wood chips) even potted plants has many advantages:
Quality long term fertility
Stop sun from heating soil and drying out plants
Stop UV light from killing soil life (never leave soil open / without cover)
Creates insect and microbial habitat adding nutrients and heat to soil
Stop weeds and grasses
Hold water
Stop frost

Autumn is a great time of the year to save seeds. Whether annual or hardy perennial, most flowers and vegetables will have gone to seed by now and are ready for collecting in the garden. Seed saving has many advantages apart from saving money and having plenty to share. You will also find that your plants become adapted to your local climate and growing conditions. You can breed your own varieties or keep old heirloom varieties alive. Seed saving also adds a degree of self-reliance and if you share your plants or seeds with friends you've got a backup. By the way the variety of fennel shown in this video is called: Florence.
Saving seeds from plants in your own garden has many advantages.
- You will learn more about plants by taking them full cycle.
- Your plants will adapt to your local condition and grow stronger year after year.
- You can save money and harvest large amounts of top quality fresh seeds.
- You can keep varieties that are no longer available for sale.
- You will become more self-reliant.
- You can develop your own varieties of fruit, flowers and vegetables.
- You can share excess seeds and plant material with friends, then you’ve got a backup.
