"I love me, I love me not" deals with the way artists fluctuate between self-loathing and narcissism during their process of creation. Every artistic pursuit is one of self discovery; this expression is never neutral but full of emotion. The fundamental emotions are self hate and self love. With this in mind, I wanted to ask artists, which of these feelings dominated the opening of Documenta 11 for them, in Kassel, Germany. I took filmic portraits and asked the artists to make a gesture showing either hate or love for themselves. They looked into the camera as if it was a mirror." "Ich lieb' mich, ich lieb' mich nicht." geht von der Erfahrung aus, dass der Künstler im Schaffensprozess zwischen Gefühlen der Selbstgeißelung und des Narzissmus hin- und herpendelt. Jeder künstlerische Ausdruck bedarf einer starken Beschäftigung mit sich selbst und diese Beschäftigung ist nicht neutral oder gefühlslos, sondern emotional. Selbsthass und Selbstliebe sind die Grundgefühle. Von dieser Überlegung ausgehend, möchte ich die Künstler der Documenta fragen, welches dieser Grundgefühle an den Tagen der Eröffnung der Documenta dominiert. Ich mache ein fotoähnliches Portrait und bitte sie, eine expressive Geste zu machen, die ausdrückt, dass sie sich hassen, oder dass sie sich lieben.
