Welcome to Storytime with Herbal Roots zine! I'm Kristine Brown and I wrote this story to help you learn about herbs.
Today, I'm reading from Issue 07 - Cavorting with Calendula (August 2009) which you can find here: https://www.herbalrootszine.com/product/august-2009-cavorting-calendula/
Calendula is such a sunny flower! Often referred to as Pot Marigold, the flowerheads range in color from light to deep orange and yellow.
Calendula was International Herb Society’s Herb of the Year in 2008 and is considered to be medicinal, culinary, and decorative.
Traditionally, the bright orange flowers were added to milk when making cheese to help color cheese, such as cheddar cheese.
We utilize the flower heads for medicine. Calendula loves our skin and is great for all things skin related such as varicose veins, wounds, sores, cuts, scrapes, sunburns, bruises, insect stings and bites, chicken pox rashes, diaper rash and so on.
She is often added to skincare products because of her skin healing abilities.
Calendula is also antifungal and can be helpful for ringworm and candida.
Sluggish lymph and leaky gut can both benefit from Calendula. Calendula is often combined with others herbs for healing the digestive tract.

Welcome to Storytime with Herbal Roots zine! I'm Kristine Brown and I wrote this story to help you learn about herbs.
Today, I'm reading from Issue 26 - Boisterous Burdock (March 2011) which you can find here: https://www.herbalrootszine.com/product/march-2011-boisterous-burdock/
Have you ever heard of Burdock? More likely you remember Burdock if you’ve ever gotten it tangled in your hair!
Burdock’s seed heads have little hooks on them, and inspired the creator of Velcro to invent it after pulling the burrs off his dog after a walk through a patch of them.
Burdock has other value too!
The roots can be eaten and are cooked like carrots, parsnips and other root vegetables. I also like to dry and roast the roots to use for a rich coffee-like beverage and will often add in chai herbs such as cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, cardamom, fennel, and bay laurel.
The seeds can be sprouted and added to salads and sandwiches.
Burdock is best known as his use as a blood purifier or alterative although he has other uses as well. He is a protective herb and his tendency to clean the blood, the kidneys and bladder and other impurities of the body through sweating tells us he really likes to clean house, especially where deep cleaning is required!
Bur Oil is a well known and used oil in Europe made from an infusion of the roots in oil. Bur oil is used mainly on hair to lessen thinning hair, improve growth, strength and luster and to also give relief from dandruff and an itchy, irritated scalp. The seeds can be infused in oil and used for this purpose as well.
Because of his strong actions on the liver, Burdock helps with skin eruptions such as psoriasis, eczema and acne. Infusions internally and oils or tinctures externally will help heal the cause of these irritations. They must be taken several times daily for at least 3 weeks before seeing any improvement and sometimes longer but it is worth the time for the results.
Burdock leaves are great for relieving burns! They can be blanched, cooled and wrapped around burns to relieve the pain and help the skin to heal. I’ve seen this work first hand several times!
