1. Multitool
If you thought the first multitool made was by Leatherman or even the Swiss Army, you couldn't be further from the truth, it is in fact a lot older, almost 2000 years old! This Roman multitool has a spoon, a fork, a knife, a spike, a spatula, and a small toothpick and it was made of silver, except for the blade which is Iron. It was discovered in the Mediterranean area in the late 1980s and is believed to have belonged to a wealthy traveler. If you like the design you can actually buy a replica made in brass for 90 euros. 2. Tessarakonteres
When we think of huge ships, we think of oil tankers and aircraft carriers, but huge ships aren't a modern thing. The Tessarakonteres was a massive ship the was built in the 3rd century BC by Ptolemy the fourth. The ship was a catamaran and was 420ft long and 57ft wide! that's about the same size as Noah's Ark! or roughly half the length of the HMS Titanic, and it was made entirely out of wood! It was so big it took 4000 oarsmen to move it, these oarsmen had to be configured in three separate rows at different heights just to be able to fit them in! the ship could carry the 4000 oarsmen plus 400 crew members and it could also carry nearly 3000 soldiers!
3. Pump-action Crossbow
Around 400 BC, a time when most armies were using spears, swords, shields and the first crossbows were appearing, the Chinese were using a pump-action crossbow! this invention meant that loading time was drastically reduced and one archer could rapidly fire up to 10 arrows without having to stop to reload. The weapon did have a rather limited range, just 250ft, so the archers poisoned the arrowheads so just a scratch would kill their adversary.
4. Chariot factory
Henry Ford is generally credited as being the father of the Mass-Production Assembly Line but this isn't actually true! Over 3000 years ago, Pharaoh Ramesses II was preparing for the Battle of Kadesh, he ordered a city to be built, "The City of Ramesses" this city was to be part pleasure palace and part military camp with a number of factories. These factories were to produce weapons, shields, and of course, Chariots. The factories produced an incredible 250 chariots every 2 weeks and they managed this by building the parts of the chariot separately and then assembling them in what would now be called a Mass-production assembly line.

Malaysia is an amazing country to visit, full of lush beaches and bountiful national parks, it's well worth the trip. But before you go, here are 10 things not to do in Malaysia!
1) Don't Bring Drugs
Okay, for most of us, this is a pretty obvious no-no. But for some travellers thinking of just sneaking a small amount of pot through customs, thinking that it's not as bad as other drugs, forget about it. For this, seemingly petty crime, in Malaysia you could be sentenced to death!
2) Don't Walk Home at Night
If you really have to go on foot, try going with some friends or someone you trust. But if you can avoid it, go by car. Streets are very unsafe at night. Anything could happen...
3) Don't Wear Your Shoes Indoors
The polite thing to do is to remove your shoes before entering someone's house to avoid bringing the dirt inside, but they don't always follow this habit, so it's best to just ask beforehand.
4) Don't Insult Their Food
Here, you'll find some of the best dishes EVER! Try all the food you can while you're here because you won't find most of it back home. Of course, you won't like it all, but avoid openly insulting it and keep your thoughts for yourself.
5) Don't Forget to Check Your Taxi
Some taxis are not properly metered, and they will try to scam you. To be sure you are taking a legitimate taxi, get the app Grab or TaxiMonger and you'll avoid the scammers.
6) Don't Point!
Using your forefinger to point at places, objects or people is considered unpolite. If you need to point at something, in Malaysia they use their thumb with all four fingers folded under.
7) Don't Forget the Greetings
The traditional greeting or salam resembles a handshake but without the shake. If somebody extends their hands to you as if in prayer, you should touch the backs of their hands and bow slightly. Some women may only bow, smile and raise their hand to their chest, in which case you should do the same.
8) Don't Kiss in Public
Malaysian locals take public behaviour very seriously and they don't see kissing or public displays of affection as a nice thing. So save it for behind closed doors.
9) Don't Drink Alcohol
The country may permit the sale of alcohol to non-Muslims but they are more strict in places like Kelantan and Terengganu which have a Muslim majority. So don't expect to have a crazy booze-up there.
10) Don't Worry About Burping
You're in a restaurant and suddenly, oh that's embarrassing... But here no one cares! In Malaysia burping after a meal is not a rude thing, quite the contrary. It just means you had a great meal. So feel free to burp!

Imagine having to scale the Burj Khalifa, or walk for 5 days in subzero temperatures, or brave an 800m long zipline over 200m in the air, just to get to school! Well, these kids do just that, and more! Here are the worst school routes IN THE WORLD!
1. Shree Adarsha School, Kanpur, Nepal.
Every day the children in the village of Kanpur join together to go down to the school in the city. An hour and a half before classes start, the Kanpur children set off for school. They must walk down the mountain to the treacherous Trishuli river.
Here, because there is no bridge, they must cross using a contraption called "The Tuin" a metal basket that hangs from two steel cables.
Sometimes, they walk down the mountain to find that "the Tuin" is on the other side and the children must wait until an adult comes and can bring it back to them, if no adults come, they will miss school and have to walk the hour trek back home for nothing.
Even if they are lucky enough to cross the river without incident, then they still have to hitch a ride on the main highway into town.
At the end of the school day they must repeat the 2-hour trip just to get back home, hopefully before night fall and with enough time to do their homework before going to bed, and then tomorrow, they'll do it all again.
2. Pamoseang Village, Indonesia.
Unlike the children in Nepal, in the remote village of Pamoseang in west Sulawesi, the children actually have a fairly decent bridge so they can cross the river and get to school, however, in this country flooding often occurs and damages the wooden slats on the bridge when this happens, and until it can be repaired, children must brave the rapid river flow in order to get to school, only the older children are strong enough to cross the river this way, younger children and girls must cross the 150ft (45m) river by shimmying across the iron cables that support the bridge. These iron cables are rusty, frayed, and slippery when wet, one mistake and a child will fall 30ft (9m) into the rapids below.
3. Atuleer Village, Sichuan, China.
Children aged 6 to 15 from the remote village of Atuleer go to boarding school in the county of Zhaojue. The only way to leave or to enter their village is via 17 different bamboo ladders with an accumulative height of 2,625ft (800m).
Every two weeks the children return from boarding school with their laden backpacks and must scale the sheer rock face to reach the remote village where 72 families reside. To put it into perspective, the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, is 2,625ft tall (800m), imagine your home was at the top and every two weeks having to climb up there on a bamboo ladder.

If you're like me, then you probably thought that a pilot just looks out of the window and visually judges when to start descent and landing, but it's actually a lot more complicated than that.
On a single-engine plane or one that flies at a reasonably low altitude, pilots land visually because they can see the runway and they learn to get a feel for when they should start to descend, on larger, commercial aircraft, this isn't possible, they fly so high that their descent needs to start well before they see the airport and if they waited until they saw it, they wouldn't have enough time to descend safely.
The pilot, therefore, has to work out distances and make calculations to know exactly when and where to commence their descent.
On the aircraft navigation display, the pilot has the approach for their target airport set up and it specifies a point with the letters T/D, this is the Top of Decent, the point where the descent to the runaway should commence. This marker can be in two different places, the one furthest from the airport is for a Direct, or Straight-in Approach and the one closest is called an Approach and Transition, this one is used so that the air traffic controller can stagger the landings of aircraft arriving at roughly the same time.
Due to the fact that the Top of Descent marker for a direct approach is the first one the aircraft will encounter, the pilot will calculate this one first.
First, the pilot needs to know how far they are from the runway, they do this by tuning into the Distance Measuring Equipment or DME that is closest to the airport.
Next, they need to calculate the altitude they need to lose, if they are flying at an altitude of 33,000ft and landing at Miami International Airport which is at sea level, they would need to descend the full 33,000ft, but if they were flying to El Alto International Airport in Bolivia which is at an altitude of 13,325ft they would only need to descend about 20,000ft.
They now need to calculate the minimum distance they need, in order to descend that amount comfortably, here the rule is for every nautical mile travelled, the plane descends 300ft, so if we have to descend 33,000ft, we'll need 110 nautical miles.
Now they have to consider speed, the average approach speed is 200 knots, if they are travelling at 400 knots they'll need to lose 200knots during their descent, a good average for most aircraft is a distance of 1 nautical for every 10 knots, so if they have to lose 200 knots, that's 20 nautical miles.
Finally, they need to calculate wind, if they have a tailwind it will be harder to lose altitude, if they have a headwind it will be easier, here, the calculation is 1 nautical mile for every 10 knots of wind, if it's a headwind they subtract it from the total if it's a tailwind

7. Don't Pay for a Statue of Liberty Tour
Avoid this outrageously priced tour and take the Staten Island ferry instead. The 50 minute round-trip ride passes most of the same sights and is completely free of charge.
8. Don't Skip a Museum Because of the Entry Fee
The entry fee that you see for most of New York's world renowned museums is just a suggested amount. You actually only have to pay what you can afford.
9. Don't Use an ATM Inside of a Store
