Louisiana man jailed for 44 years on rape charges is freed as prosecutor dismisses charges after judge calls for new trial
(CNN)Vincent Simmons. a Louisiana man who fought for 44 years to overturn his conviction on attempted aggravated rape charges. has had the judgment vacated and the charges have been dismissed. according to his attorneys Justin Bonus and Malcolm Larvadain. 'He's a free man. He was released a couple of hours ago from Angola State Penitentiary.' Larvadain said Monday. A judge had ordered a new trial because exculpatory evidence had not been turned over to the original defense team. Larvadain said. In 1977. it took just minutes for a jury of 11 White men and one Black woman to convict Simmons. who is Black. for the attempted sexual assault of 14 year old twin sisters. 'God. God kept hope alive in me.' Simmons said as he walked Monday through the courthouse in Marksville. Louisiana. according to CNN affiliate KALB. 'God did this for me today.' Riddle said in a statement entered into the court record that despite believing there was 'sufficient evidence to find Vincent Simmons guilty.' he didn't want the victims 'to undergo the trauma of another trial' or be victimized again. Riddle said he will not appeal the judge's decision and asked to no longer prosecute Simmons. 'Just in case anyone has any doubt. no this is not a declaration of innocence at all.' he said. 'We attempted to free him months ago because he has served enough time. Let this case be put to bed and the victims free...

What you need to know about Thursday’s snowstorm: Highest snow now up to 9 inches
As the storm approaches Michigan. there are a few things I think you should be aware of. The latest data has slight changes. but significant changes in my mind. First. it’s becoming really apparent it’s a two part storm. with the second part being later and the most significant part. The accumulation of snow will almost stop in the middle of the day Thursday. and you may think the snowstorm isn’t happening. The snow will come back into the southeast populated part of Michigan late Thursday afternoon and drop most of the snow Thursday evening. This also means there may be not so dangerous roads to drive on Thursday morning and early afternoon. The road conditions won’t be great. but they may also not be terrible. That situation will change quickly when the second wave of snow starts late Thursday afternoon. This leads to the second slight tweaking. All of the data is consistent on shifting the heavy snow band about 20 miles southeast. Now this puts Ann Arbor. the entire Detroit area. the cities along Lake St. Clair. Monroe. Adrian and Hillsdale right in the middle of the heaviest snow swath. This also means the cities that are on the northern edge of the heaviest snow will have less snow. Grand Rapids. Saginaw and Bay City are definitely not in the heavy snow now. Of course. they weren’t projected to be in the heavy snow earlier either. Flint and Lansing are in the transition zone from heavy snow to not heavy snow. The final tweak is the total snowfall forecast. The heaviest swath of snow has increased an inch or two for the most common amount of snow. Earlier. it looked like a 5 to 8 inch snow in the heavy swath. I would now call it a 6 to 9 inch snow in the heaviest swath. What that should tell you is the storm isn’t falling apart. It’s holding together to be a pretty solid snowstorm for southeast Lower Michigan. Yesterday. it looked like some above freezing air could hang in the Detroit Metro area. and cut the snow by a couple of inches. Now it appears the cold air will be in place before the second wave of heavier precipitation moves into the Detroit area. We have to choose one model to go from. I like the North American Model (NAM) at this distance out from the start and end of the storm. The NAM is good at giving an accurate overall snowstorm placement and snow amount. It can also pinpoint some of the heavier streaks of snow. I would still ignore the 10 inch amounts in the forecast. but keep it in the back of your head that it is possible. So look for 6 to 9 inches. with 6 and 7 inches being common. from Kalamazoo to Coldwater to Jackson to Ann Arbor. Detroit. Oakland County. St. Clair County and the Monroe. Hillsdale and Adrian areas. A Russian invasion could reach farther than the Ukraine. How a cyberattack could affect you.
WASHINGTON – Russian President Vladimir Putin's track record of unleashing destructive 'hybrid warfare' cyberattacks has U.S. security officials fearing he could once again reach across continents and wreak havoc on unwitting Americans as worries about a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine persist. They call it the “spillover effect.” And they say the temporary takedown of some prominent Ukrainian military and financial sector websites Tuesday resembled the kind of prelude to more significant Russian cyberwarfare attacks that could get out of hand. Russia has a long and demonstrated history of unleashing such powerful cyberweapons against its adversaries. former top Pentagon cybersecurity official Lucian Niemeyer told USA TODAY. And once that happens. they can spread virtually anywhere – and potentially everywhere – without the ability to control them he said. “Anytime we see that cyber is involved in an attack around the world. there's always the potential that it can spread quickly and have unintended consequences.” said Niemeyer. who served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Energy. Installations and Environment from 2017 to 2021. White House and U.S. intelligence officials had no comment on whether they believe the so called Dedicated Denial of Services attacks on the websites of two large Ukrainian banks and the country's defense ministry and Army were the work of state sponsored Russian cyber warriors. Such cyber ops are notoriously hard to attribute. especially given that nation states like Russia often use proxy criminal hacking groups to do theirbidding. according to Niemeyer and other current and former U.S. cybersecurity officials. More: Local governments are more vulnerable to cyberattacks than ever before. DHS wants mayors to step up. But Putin. a former KGB officer. has a demonstrated history of using destabilizing cyberattacks – often much more destructive than Tuesday's – in advance of sending in conventional military forces. That's what happened in 2008. when low grade attacks against Georgia’s Internet infrastructure preceded an all out cyberwar that coincided with Russia's invasion of its neighbor. Cybersecurity experts say that marked the first time a known cyberattack coincided with a shooting war. Since then. the Kremlin also has used cyberattacks as an alternative to conventional warfare when trying to destabilize its enemies and undermine citizens' confidence in their government and private institutions. experts and current and former U.S. officials say. That's especially the case with Ukraine. where Moscow is believed to be behind numerous cyberattacks for nearly a decade. In 2015 and 2016. the Kremlin plan

NASA space telescope captures 1st starlight. takes selfie
NASA’s new space telescope has captured its first starlight and even taken a selfie of its giant. gold mirror. All 18 segments of the primary mirror on the James Webb Space Telescope seem to be working properly 1 1/2 months into the mission. officials said Friday. The telescope's first target was a bright star 258 light years away in the constellation Ursa Major. 'That was just a real wow moment.' said Marshall Perrin of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. NASA PROBE CAPTURES FIRST IMAGES OF VENUS' SURFACE IN VISIBLE LIGHT Over the next few months. the hexagonal mirror segments — each the size of a coffee table — will be aligned and focused as one. allowing science observations to begin by the end of June. The $10 billion infrared observatory — considered the successor to the aging Hubble Space Telescope — will seek light from the first stars and galaxies that formed in the universe nearly 14 billion years ago. It will also examine the atmospheres of alien worlds for any possible signs of life. NASA did not detect the crippling flaw in Hubble's mirror until after its 1990 launch; more than three years passed before spacewalking astronauts were able to correct the telescope's blurry vision. Will Louisiana redistricting be impacted by Supreme Court ruling on Alabama?
As it became clear that Republican leaders planned to pass redistricting maps that would not expand minority seats in Congress or the Louisiana Legislature. Black lawmakers said they had two fallbacks—possible vetoes by Gov. John Bel Edwards or lawsuits. Now both of those options appear uncertain. according to LSU Manship School News Service. The Louisiana House and Senate both passed congressional redistricting plans last week by margins large enough to override vetoes by Edwards if lawmakers could muster those votes again. And last Monday. the Supreme Court delayed hearing a suit in a similar redistricting fight in Alabama in a move that legal experts say could hint at less court intervention in the redistricting process in the future. In a 5 4 vote. the court’s conservative majority let a redistricting plan passed by the Alabama Legislature stand through this fall’s midterm elections even though an appeals court had ruled that the law may have violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in failing to provide for a second minority majority congressional district. The Supreme Court said it would consider the merits of the Alabama case later. But that is not likely to happen until after the November elections. which will decide the balance of power in Congress. Peter Robins Brown. executive director for advocacy group Louisiana Progress. says the Supreme Court decision to let the GOP’s Alabama redistricting map stand for now is likely in Louisiana to “embolden those who were already planning to submit a map that would end up in court and make folks who were planning to challenge those maps feel a little worse.” Read the full story.

San Francisco school board recall day arrives with 3 board members' futures at stake
SAN FRANCISCO – Voters in San Francisco head to the polls Tuesday for a recall election that is seen by many as a reckoning for the board of the San Francisco Unified School District. The rare special election takes aim at three board members. all Democrats. who've served long enough to be eligible to be recalled: Alison Collins. Gabriela Lopez and Faauuga Moliga. Recall supporters said these three. and indeed the entire board. have prioritized race over education through a series of blunders during the COVID 19 pandemic. 'They need to go because they're playing politics.' said Kit Lam. a recall organizer who gathered hundreds of signatures to qualify the recall. including from many first time voters. 'They don't care about our children's education.' The recall effort began more than a year ago while public schools remained closed even as San Francisco's private schools figured out how to reopen safely. and as city officials deemed it was safe for all kids to return to in person classes. Last year. the city attorney sued the school board over its failure to reopen. The pandemic saw student enrollment drop and the district's budget shortfall grow to $125 million. Amid the growing financial crisis. and with many students struggling with remote learning. the school board focused on renaming 44 school sites deemed to be offensive. including high schools named after Abraham...

Video shows hundreds of blackbirds falling from the sky and crashing into pavement
Hundreds of blackbirds were seen on video falling from the sky in Mexico and hitting the pavement. Some died on impact. The circumstances surrounding the event led some to question whether it was pollution or 5G on social media. However. an animal expert told The Guardian it was likely a predatory bird that led the flock of birds to the ground. Security camera footage recorded the incident on Feb. 7. according to the local paper El Heraldo de Chihuahua. Residents in the community saw hundreds of blackbirds dead on the streets and sidewalks and called police. Dr. Richard Broughton. an ecologist with the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. told The Guardian he believed there was a raptor who chased the birds and drove them to the ground. What's everyone talking about? Sign up for our trending newsletter to get the latest news of the day 'Shouldn’t be on our landscape': Bird flu found on poultry farm in Indiana. nearly 30.000 turkeys killed to contain spread “This looks like a raptor like a peregrine or hawk has been chasing a flock. like they do with murmurating starlings. and they have crashed as the flock was forced low.” he said. “You can see that they act like a wave at the beginning. as if they are being flushed from above.” Other possible causes for the bizarre fall include the birds inhaling toxic smoke from a nearby heater or they were standing on an overloaded power line. In 2014. birds continued to fall from the sky in St. Louis. Mich.. after they fed on insects and grubs from contaminated soil. Decades of pollution for a former nearby chemical plant led to a forensic study that found lethal levels of DDT in the birds collected.
