GoPro going down a 650-feet deep mineshaft - abandoned mine near Joshua Tree
I lowered my Gopro Max 360° down a mineshaft that according to the USGS is 650 feet deep. It was a rough/bumpy ride down the shaft and the lens of the GoPro Max got cracked banging against the sides, even though I lowered it down the center of the mine shaft - so this gopro is trashed unless I can find a cheap lens-replacement (not the same or as easy as with a Gopro Hero). Spoiler alert: there are no skeletons, no ghosts, or anything else scary or bazaar at the bottom of the mine-shaft.. Just some dirt and rocks. This is the abandoned Mission Mine in the Old Dale Mining District not far from Joshua Tree - you can only get to this mine with a 4WD vehicle. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma_63NQG7oc

In this video I explain when you should use a ham radio or GMRS repeater and when you should not use a GMRS repeater or a amateur radio repeater. I explain when simplex is the right choice for GMRS or ham radio communications and I give a brief overview of how amateur radio repeaters and GMRS repeaters work. Its like an amateur radio for beginners or GMRS for dummies video, almost.

What does the FCC say about need a ham radio license or a GMRS license to transmit during an emergency and how does the FCC define an 'emergency'? And what does the FCC say about using any radio without a license in a SHTF scenario? For example, can you use a UV-5R on GMRS frequencies Ido call for help in an emergency? In this video I tell you OPINIONS and MY interpretation of what the FCC rules (not laws) say about non-licensed radio usage during a SHTF or emergency situation.

Highlights from the first 2 miles of Mouse Trap Jeep Trail. MouseTrap is a new 4x4 trail recently established by SoCal Jeepers and is located in Apple Valley, not far from Johnson Road. Mouse Trap Off-Road Trail is about 3 miles long and is rated moderately difficult - however recent (early 2020) rains have made this rock-crawling trail considerably more difficult. Generally it should take 4-5 hours to complete Mouse Trap, but on this run it took much longer to complete and we did not finish until well after dark, which is why this video only shows about the first 2 miles of the trail. The last mile of Mouse Trap is more difficult than anything shown in this video.

You can get yourself a new Baofeng UV-5G Plus here: https://amzn.to/46THBug
Baofeng has put a new hidden feature on at least some of its new radios - the One Touch Frequency Search. This new almost hidden feature allows the radio to scan all frequencies (UHF, VHF, or the 200Mhz range) for any strong/close signal. The Baofeng radio will then display what frequency is being transmitted along with any CTCSS or DCS tone that is in use. Baofeng barely mentions this feature in the radio manual and some of the Baofeng sales literature describes it as "Wireless Frequency Copy" because it will allow you to save the frequency it scans/detects and the CTCSS or DCS tone into a channel.
This is a great new feature hidden away in these new Baofeng GMRS (and maybe?) Baofeng ham radios.

White Mountain (3N17) is a 7.5 mile "black diamond" (most difficult) 4-wheeling and off-road trail in the mountains near Big Bear, above Lucerne Valley (Southern California). This 4wheeling trail is normally run from west to east starting at 4N16 and ending on 3N16, but it can also be run the opposite direction. The trail is very narrow in many areas so watch for oncoming traffic.
We ran the trail starting at 4N16 about a week after a rain/snow storm. The storm left some mud making things slippery in some areas but even when dry the dirt and sand on the hills is still very loose and difficult to keep traction on.
Not far after leaving 4N16 the flat road quickly turns rocky and starts up the steep hills and within the first 2 miles you will encounter the first difficult hill climb. At 0:24 the video incorrectly refers to 3N14 - it should read "4N16".
There are a few more steep, loose and rocky hills to climb after that, but they all have bypass roads. Suicide Hill is the most famous and difficult of the hills. Suicide Hill is very steep and loose and at the top is very narrow and off-camber (slanted) with a ledge that drops a few hundred feet straight down.
Most of the hills can be done in a slightly lifted Jeep with no lockers but most recommend a front and rear locker for Suicide Hill, especially if there is any mud or snow on the trail. In heavy snow conditions or if there is a chance of ice on the trail it would be extremely dangerous to attempt Suicide Hill.
The White Mountain off-road trail can be done in any high-clearance vehicle with 4 wheel drive, but to do all of the hills may take a more equipped vehicle. It took our group just over 4 hours to travel the 7.65 miles from 4N16 to 3N16.
Inexperienced drivers should not attempt this trail and this trail should never be attempted alone.
