Grade 2 Math 5.11, Ways to Add Review (two-digit numbers)
A review of the ways we have learned to add so far. Use a pencil and paper, mental math, a hundred chart, or models of tens and ones to add. A word problem is included. Page 153 in the Silver Burdett Grade 2 textbook.
We can represent a proportional relationship with a graph. The graph will be a straight line that passes through the origin (0,0). We walk-through problems involving a graph, in which we make a table from the ordered pairs, find the constant of proportionality, and write an equation in the form y=kx.

In video 6.6 (linked below), we learned that a benchmark is a known size or amount that helps us understand a different size or amount. We can use benchmarks to compare and relate measurement units. When we know the size of one object, we can use it as a benchmark to find the sizes of other objects. Benchmarks are not used to give exact measurements. We use them to compare sizes as an estimate. A mile is a U.S. Customary Unit for measuring length or distance. A person can walk 1 mile in about 20 minutes. We can use the distance we would walk in about 20 minutes as a benchmark for 1 mile. We can use containers as benchmarks for U.S. Customary Units of liquid volume. We can use objects as benchmarks for customary units of weight. We can even use benchmarks for metric units of measure. We review the customary units for length, liquid volume, and weight. We also review the metric units for length, liquid volume, and mass. I explain the difference between weight and mass, and which countries use the metric system. We find out what a Smoot is, as a benchmark.

Making a model can help us solve subtraction problems. We can use base 10 blocks, or draw a quick picture of blocks to help us model the action in a subtraction problem. The "action" in a subtraction problem is what happened. It's what went away, was taken away, eaten, used, and so on. The action could be comparing amounts to find their difference. We solve 5 word problems that involve quick pictures to solve 3-digit subtraction.

We can represent and locate fractions on a number line. We divide the number line into equal length and draw marks on the line at the end of each equal length. To locate a fraction, we can use the numerator to count the number of equal lengths. The denominator will tell us how many equal lengths there are in all. The length from 0 to 1 represents one whole, and one whole number to the next whole number represents 1 whole. We complete a number line and draw a point to show a given fraction. We use bar models to see the fraction of each part of a number line. We write a fraction that names a lettered point.

Data is information that is numbers, words, or both. A tally mark is a small mark that is used to represent a number or quantity (amount). A tally chart is a table that uses tally marks to record data. We count tally marks in groups of five. After we count 4, we make a diagonal (slanted) line for the 5th mark. We can record our data on a tally chart. We can quickly see the data. A survey is a collection of data from answers to a question. We can use a tally chart to record data from a survey by putting a tally mark in the chart for each response (answer). For each response, we put one tally. We answer questions for 3 different tally charts. We put data from a list into a tally chart.

To find decimal sums and differences, we can use mental math and properties, pencil and paper, or a calculator. The Commutative Property of Addition lets us change the order of two addends. We'll get the same sum. The Associative Property of Addition lets us change the way addends are grouped. We can use mental math to add decimals if we use the Commutative and Associative Properties of Addition. When we add decimals by using place value and regrouping, we add them just as we would add whole numbers. But, we must line up the decimal points. We show many different types of calculators. But any calculator can solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. To add or subtract decimals on a calculator, we push a key for each part of the equation. The sum or difference will appear on the screen. But, using our brain power will strengthen our math skills. Be careful when using a calculator! If we accidentally push the the wrong key, we will get a wrong answer. We can estimate the sum or difference to be sure our answer is reasonable. We can also use the calculator a second time to see if we get the same answer. Sometimes mental math or paper and pencil will be faster than using a calculator. The Commutative and Associative properties cannot be used for subtraction because they change the order of the digits. The minuend needs to be first. Remember, we can use trailing zeros to the right of a decimal to give it more digits so we can regroup. We can use an inverse operation to solve for an unknown amount, such as a variable, or to check our answer. We solve an equation in which we first find the sum of the addends that we know, then use subtraction to find an unknown amount. We solve a word problem that involves addition and subtraction of decimals.

We've learned that algebraic expressions contain terms with their separated by + and - sign. This tells us that a term is part of an expression that is added to or subtracted from another part of an expression. We review the definition of variable, coefficient, integer, rational number, sum, difference, product, quotient, and factor. An expression represents mathematical operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) using signs and symbols. Expressions can be written with words. There is usually more than one way to describe an expression with words. Numerical expressions contain numbers. Algebraic expressions contain at least one variable. We describe several expressions with words that involve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division or a combination of these operations.

A spreadsheet is a piece of paper or a computer program used for accounting and recording data using rows and columns into which information can be entered. Microsoft Excel is an example of a spreadsheet program. It's part of Microsoft Office Suite. OpenOffice is a full-featured free version. A spreadsheet can be used to find the mean absolute deviation, or MAD, of a data set. The spreadsheet has columns going down and rows going across. We can choose to enter the data values across in a row, or down in a column. I chose down in a column. I show step-by-step instructions of how to enter the data values, how to find the average (or mean) of those data values, and how to find the distances from the data values to the average as the MAD.
