Reality: Fundamental Topics in Metaphysics
Author: Peter Loptson
File Type: pdf
In Reality Fundamental Topics in Metaphysics, Peter Loptson argues for a conception of metaphysics as the most general or comprehensive method of inquiry. Working from a broadly analytic and naturalist perspective, he confronts positions that claim metaphysics to be impossible, as advanced in ancient, Kantian, post-Kantian, and contemporary philosophy, showing them to be unsuccessful. He draws the topics of his selective investigation of metaphysics partly from the work of Kant, whom he conceives as a primary guide to what metaphysical enquiry seeks to know. Loptson provides accounts of basic categories of what is real and outlines major historical metaphysical systems. He then goes on to explore aspects of existence, essence, substance, universals, space, time, causality, mind, freedom, and other topics. This important contribution to metaphysics offers both sustained arguments on all aspects of the subject and important insights into the major metaphysical systems from the history of philosophy. The first edition of Reality appeared in 2001 to great acclaim. For this new edition the author has augmented the works original arguments and extensively enlarged its scope and engagement with current stances and debates.**ReviewAn important original contribution to metaphysics. -- Panayot Butchvarov, in Philosophy and Phenomenological ResearchAbout the Author Peter Loptson is a professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Guelph. Philosophy of Mind in the Early and High Middle Ages provides an outstanding overview to a tumultuous 900-year period of discovery, innovation, and intellectual controversy that began with the Roman senator Boethius (c480-524) and concluded with the Franciscan theologian and philosopher John Duns Scotus (c1266-1308). Relatively neglected in philosophy of mind, this volume highlights the importance of philosophers such as Abelard, Duns Scotus, and the Persian philosopher and polymath Avicenna to the history of philosophy of mind. Following an introduction by Margaret Cameron, twelve specially commissioned chapters by an international team of contributors discuss key topics, thinkers and debates, including ul l mental perception l l Avicenna and the intellectual abstraction of intelligibles l l Duns Scotus l l soul, will, and choice in Islamic and Jewish contexts l l perceptual experience l l the systematization of the passions l l the complexity of the soul and the problem of unity l l the phenomenology of immortality l l morality and l l the self. l ul Essential reading for students and researchers in philosophy of mind, medieval philosophy, and the history of philosophy, Philosophy of Mind in the Early and High Middle Ages is also a valuable resource for those in related disciplines such as Religion. **Review Praise for The History of the Philosophy of Mind A monumental resource for anyone interested in the human mind and the history of philosophical attempts to understand it. Students who consult these volumes will appreciate the multiple branching paths that connect past philosophical writings to those of the present. The juxtapositions of topics and historical figures in each volume can help researchers in contemporary philosophy of mind identify precedents for contemporary positions. - Susanna Siegel, Harvard University, USA This six-volume history of the philosophy of mind is a compendious tour-de-force, tracing the sources of modern problems to a vibrant philosophical conversation ranging from antiquity to the present day. This is a special and uniquely wide-ranging resource for anyone, from the novice to the expert, with an interest in the nature of mind and its faculties, as well as its relation to the body and the physical world. - Samuel Rickless, University of California San Diego, USA These six volumes constitute an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the philosophy of mind and the history of philosophy as well as metaphysics, psychology, and cognitive science and I recommend them, with great enthusiasm, to all. Togetherthey illuminate areas of inquiry that may be unfamiliar to contemporary philosophers of mind, and reveal unappreciated subtleties and continuities in theories of mind throughout the history of philosophy. - Janet Levin, University of Southern California, USA A comprehensive and illuminating guide to the history of Western theories of the mind, ranging over every aspect of the enduring philosophical debate, from consciousness to perception, and from will to the passions. These volumes collectively offer a state-of-the-art presentation of the field. - Robert Pasnau, University of Colorado Boulder, USA About the Author Margaret Cameron is Canada Research Council Chair in the Aristotelian Tradition (Tier II) and an associate professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Victoria, Canada. Author: Jen George
File Type: epub
Five stories--several as long as novellas--introduce the world to Jen George, a writer whose furiously imaginative new voice calls to mind Donald Barthelme and Leonora Carrington no less than Kathy Acker and Chris Kraus. In GuidanceThe Party an ethereal alcoholic Guide in robes and flowing hair appears to help a thirty-three-year-old woman prepare a party for her belated adulthood Take Care of Me Forever tragically lambasts the medical profession as a ship of fools afloat in loneliness and narcissism Instruction chronicles a season in an unconventional art school called The Warehouse, where students divide their time evenly between orgies, art critiques, and burying dead racehorses. Combining slapstick, surrealism, erotica, and social criticism, Jen Georges sprawling creative energy belies the secret precision and unexpected tenderness of everything she writes. With a weird, beautiful energy, George explores the challenges of woman-being singlehood, self-doubt, motherhood, the dismaying fact of aging, the (dis)ability to love. A modern-day Jane Bowles, George engages these mysteries in prose that is funny, charming, dark, and insightful. --Deb Olin Unferth Im so happy this collection exists. I feel drunk with love for these stories. Theyre so funny and weird and true. --Sheila Heti Reading The Babysitter at Rest is an immersion into a hidden world. Its a place which is at first recognizable, before it becomes completely warped. Jen George has a way of bending the narrative which is distinctly her own. Her stories are at once poignant and disciplined in their abstraction, and hilarious in their inappropriate and reckless abandon.--Matthew Barney **Review Our Favorite Books from 2016 @ *The Believer* Best Short Story Collections of 2016 @ *Electric Literature* Best Fiction Books, 2016 @ *Entropy* Our 20 Favorite Books of 2016 @ *The A.V. Georges writing is funny, courageous, smart, surreal, seductive, and terrifyingly vulnerable.Electric Literature We all know its commitment to something absurd that makes things funnybut in The Babysitter at Rest Jen George commits to scenarios that are not just absurd but weird in a deeply true, unspeakable-underpinning-of-reality sort of way. And thus her commitment is both funny and kind of spiritual at the same timeand by laughing, youre admitting this female inner universe exists. And that kind of changes everything.Miranda July, author of *The First Bad Man A Novel* Im so happy this collection exists. I feel drunk with love for these stories. Theyre so funny and weird and true.Sheila Heti, author of *How Should a Person Be?* George goes there again and again, combining the profane and the pathetic with a rarely seen energy. Whens the last time you read an opening line this charged? On a bed in the emergency room, being pumped full of morphine and oxycodone, vomiting, then being pumped full of the same medications, I recall the ways Ive always been. (That little information about George is availableshe was born in California and lives in New Yorkonly heightens the appeal her work stands alone.)The A.V.
