The Chinese Gold Murders Part 2 - Death of the Reader
We discuss chapters 8-13 of Dutch diplomat Robert van Gulik's reinterpretation of an 18th-century Chinese magistrate-detective, Judge Dee. With a growing surety of how his predecessor was killed, speakers bring new cases before the tribunal, telling stories of missing women, abandoned marriages, and the ever-present threat of a tiger, potentially of supernatural persuasion. As religious affiliations begin to complicate district politics, how does Judge Dee keep his house in order?

We discuss chapters 7-8 of María Angélica Bosco's 'Death Going Down', translated by Lucy Greaves. The novel comes to a bewildering end, with dramatic re-enactments, disappearing dogs and apparating new characters with the ability to disappear. This charming Argentinian novel has us a little torn, but we still think it's a worthy read as we come to the pointy end of 2021.

We discuss chapters 20-26 of A Decent Interval by Simon Brett. With the case solved, how can Charles Paris safely separate himself from the crime? We’ve discovered Charles’ moral compass might not be quite centred, but is his resolution satisfying, and how does Simon Brett’s mystery construction hold up to Knox and Van Dine, as well as Flex’s signature method. We’re joined again by Simon Brett to talk about the evolving field of crime fiction, as well as how he uses ‘superstructures’ to help guide his writing and how inspiration doesn’t necessarily lead to unoriginality.

Shannon and Kanon talk boys, Beatrice and Shannon talk colours, Kinzo talks to the air again, and Felix is still very confused.
If you're confused, Ben is the one who knows what's going on, Felix is the one who is lost.

Is the Hojou family cursed, or is something more sinister going on behind the scenes? Whatever the answer is we sure as hell won't have any questions once Ryukishi's done with this.
If you're confused, Ben is the one who knows what's going on, Felix is the one who is lost, for now.

We discuss the Fourth through Seventh stories in Sins for Father Knox by Josef Škvorecký; A Question of Alibis, Why So Many Shamuses, Miscarriage of Justice, and The Mathematicians of Grizzly Drive. Following Eve Adam's travels from Sweden to San Francisco and beyond, the crimes continue to tail her, with the sins against Father Ronald Knox hot on their tails. As the crimes get more convoluted, can Flex keep up or will he finally be left in the dust by the story? We also chat with Adam Graham from The Great Detectives of Old Time Radio, a monumental podcast collection of the world's best detective fiction radio dramas.

We discuss chapters 5-9 from No Crime in the Mountains by Raymond Chandler. As the plot gets slowly more ludicrous, Flex derails the conversation to complain about Chandler's non-fiction writing about the Crime Fiction genre, including his very own set of rules. Herds is put to the task to determine if his own claim that 'if they give you the answer early, it must be a lie' is true. We're also joined by former 2SER Breakfast host Tess Connery, who after promising us a discussion on True Crime in April, decided to depart the station.

We discuss Bruce Hamilton's 'Too Much of Water', chapters 9-12. Just when you thought the murderer was done, one more body finds itself committed to what we presume are watery depths. As the Goyaz ventures towards its last port of call, Edgar's list of suspects grows implausibly small, but will it point him in the right direction? A hearty twist and help from on high rattle the boat through to the conclusion of this gruesome voyage.
We're also joined by Martin Edwards (https://martinedwardsbooks.com/) , chair of The Detection Club, crime fiction historian, and author, to talk about how Bruce Hamilton is one of the genre's 'nearly men (https://doyouwriteunderyourownname.blogspot.com/2020/07/forgotten-book-too-much-of-water.html) ', and continue our discussion on how the themes in Bruce's writing evolved over the years.

We discuss The Ruby and the Caldron, and Chapter 2 of The House in the Mist, by Anna Katharine Green. Both stories provide drastically different atmospheres; while House in the Mist continues to be creepy and not like your typical detective story, Ruby and the Caldron feels much more like a classic detective story, with a very silly attitude. We also sat down with acclaimed children's author and recent OAM inductee Anna Fienberg to talk about her writing approach and the fairy tales that inspired them.
