China's ISS Competitor Begins Construction In Orbit
Yesterday China's Long March 5 carried the first module of their space station into orbit, a 20 ton module derived from the Russian DOS designs, which will be the core of a much larger 60 ton orbital facility able to host astronauts for months at a time. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06GUEkc4EEA
CCP Just released 6 new limited edition ships on the test server so I took a look at them.

A bundle of news and updates on missions I've previously talked about with recent events. Information on the Dragon 2 anomaly is still thin on the ground, but NASA & SpaceX are moving forward with the next Dragon 1 launch to the ISS so that's an indication that they have probably eliminated any likelihood of commonality with Dragon 1.

A Quick news round up covering a lot of important events in the last few days. Interstellaria is a game that was kickstarted about a year ago for a modest goal promising a space exploration game with retro graphics and a soundtrack by chiptune star Chipzel. Definitly a niche title, but if you fondly remember PC games from the days before VGA became the standard then you'll understand the aesthetic.

SpaceX performed the debut launch of their next Generation Starship-Superheavy launch vehicle, and it didn't make it to orbit. But it was still very much a case of Excitment delivered as the vehicle destroyed its launchpad, had engines fail and parts explode as it ascenced, before finally spinning end over end until it was destroyed in a giant cloud of cryogenic propellents.

The Trinity test was something of a moment of truth for the scientists and engineers behind the Manhattan project, and while Oppenheimer is getting the movie, the person that's most directly responsible for making the gadget work was the explosives experts who developed the implosion system.
Making an implosion successfully compress the pit required an understanding of explosion dynamics that simply didn't exist before it was studied at Los Alamos. And making it work required some hand tweaking, right down to the head of X-Division manually drilling out and filling air bubbles using a dentist drill.
And then the detonation system used technology which had been developed to take photographs.

Having made it to Jacques station I'm 'only' 12,000 light years from Sagittarius A*, a supermassive black hole in the core of the galaxy. In Elite: Dangerous this is something of a tourist destination for explorers so, since I was in the nieghbourhood I headed out that way after doing my bit to help with the development of the new outpost.
