Grounding Challenge: Day 3.5 Response to A Modern Frontier
One good grounding deserves a response, Adam (@amodernfrontier on Instagram)!
The snow has melted and the wind is blowing, but it turned out to be a glorious day to soak up some sunshine and goodness.
You are correct, Adam: I need a greenhouse at Eagles Ridge! Hey, Jules, let’s move that up on the priority list!
I am loving the responses from friends about this challenge. We clearly need some more snow to make my feet cold and people wonder what the hell is wrong with me! Ha ha ha! ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SxocaC4nWw
It’s Friday! Happy Friday, all! Just doing a quick video to pump you up and give you a ray of sunshine. Sorry for the audio quality; this is why I use my GoPro or always use headphones. This is essentially a News From Around the Bend: I provide some ideas for podcasts and blogs to pass your time when you aren’t listening to me.
We are all in this together, and we can support each other. Keep stress down by taking a walk, getting outside, and listening to a babbling brook (video to be posted soon). Join our community on Facebook and stay connected.
We can do this. We will win, and we have an opportunity to reset on the other side and do this better!

This is the second video that corresponds to a garden update blog post on Small Scale Life (http://wp.me/p6NX1f-i3). In this video, we review the Hybrid Rain Gutter Grow System and the wicking bed system on my driveway. Both systems have preformed very well this season, although it took longer for plants the Hybrid Rain Gutter Grow System to produce.
Based on my experience with both systems this year, I have some pros and cons for each system that I will be writing about in the future. Both systems work, but I have a clear favorite system at this point.
I will have more updates before the end of the season. Fall is here; winter is coming fast. I need the fruit on these plants to ripen up, and I will finish Harvest and Putting Up Season!

In this episode of Gardening 101, I will show you how to harvest basil! You can start harvesting basil when the plant is 6” to 8” tall. In my case, I let them grow until they were 2’ tall! That is a bit tall. You will find that as you prune basil, the plants will become more full and bushy rather than tall and “leggy.” By pruning these plants, you will get more basil at the end of the season (lesson learned). I will really cut these basil plants back, and in a week in the next Garden Update, I will show you how they respond.
Thank You

Hey, all! We are on Day 15 of our April 2024 Whole30 Challenge! We are half way there.
Happy Earth Day as well. We have SO MANY birds coming back; I had to get more feeders out for them. The hummingbirds and Baltimore Orioles will be retuning soon, so those feeders got added to the mix. I truly am going to build a bird sanctuary here; I am well on my way.
You should have processed through the detox phase and should feel better. Your stomach should have adjusted, cravings died down and mind cleared up.
Keep those small, non-scale, victories in mind. Make a mental note of them. When did you start feeling better? When did the clothes fit better? When did your face look different? When did someone ask what is different about you?
These are the things that matter. The scale is a liar and a tool to keep you stressed and depressed. Your victories are NOT found there.
KEEP GOING
Remember: keep going. Don’t stop now; you are half way there.
I know you are tempted to get on the scale and see what is happening. Resist that urge!
You might stumble and cheat a bit. It’s ok; keep going!
We are moving right along. Stay focused. Keep going! It does get easier and better!
Remember to learn, do, grow and be a little better everyday. And that’s a good thing!
~ Tom

Helping people: that's what drives so many entrepreneurs. These brave folks have talents, skills, ideas and most importantly the gumption to get up and address needs in their community. Frankly, the world needs more of this spirit now!
In this Small Scale Life Podcast and Video, I have the honor of interviewing Kris Geissler. Kris saw a need to provide driver’s education in her community, and she started the Northfield Area School of Driving to help teach students how to drive safely.
Who is Kris Geissler? Kris is a single mom and has a background in special education. She went from the St. Peter Security Hospital to teaching. She wanted to help students who were struggling in school in an effort to prevent them from going down a dark path. Kris has a passion to help these students succeed in school and life.
Northfield is a community south of the Twin Cities and home to St. Olaf College, Carleton Collage and Malt-O-Meal. It is far enough from the Twin Cities that it is beautiful bedroom community with small town charm, but it is big enough that there are needs for students and people that go unfulfilled.
One of those needs was driver’s education. There were no driver’s education classes available to local students. Kris saw that need and started her school to address that need in the Northfield area, especially when Community Education said "no."
Do You See a Need?
Do you see a need for a product or service?
Maybe this podcast episode is just what you needed to hear to push you to START. That is the most difficult thing: to overcome your fear and start. It is my goal to inspire you to take that step forward and begin. Escape Velocity is achieved after you get some momentum and small successes.
The key, however, is to start!
What's holding you back?
Think about it as you listen to Kris Geissler’s story about her Amazing Driver’s Education in Northfield, Minnesota!

The 2016 St. Louis Park Boys Basketball Campaign was a great improvement over the past two years. Finishing the season with a first round sectional loss at Armstrong HS, the Orioles went 18-8. They had a great year, and four players were chosen for All Conference (Ray Whitlock and Mykal Howard) and All Conference Honorable Mention (Cire Mayfield and Ryan Domres).

I was out at Eagles Ridge on 3-3-2021 and took a quick video of the Apple River while I sat on a bag of pea gravel above the Stairs.
It is amazing how fast the snow is melting!
The stairs faired the winter. I don’t see any erosion or slope collapse, which is GREAT! We’ll have our Spring wet season coming, and that is when things could get a little dicey. We’ll have to keep monitoring it.
We do have a plan for finishing this portion of the stairs, and we have been looking at different ways to drop the last 10-15 feet to the shore below. I think we found a route that is do-able where we won’t need a massive stair system. More on that later!
Spring Road Restrictions are going up in St. Croix County this week. We have 30-60 days before it’s GO TIME on the Eagles Ridge Barndominium Project (our house).
Giddy up!
Right now...I’m just going to enjoy the view and the sounds of the Apple River!

In this Small Scale Life YouTube video and Podcast Episode, I publishing Meditation Stream: Tree of Life. My hope is that this will help you during the chaotic holidays. With new restrictions and rules stressing families at the holidays, I thought this was the right time to say “thank you” to our great audience and give you something that will soothe nerves and allow you to relax.
As I explored Northwestern Wisconsin this fall, I discovered a little island in the middle of the St. Croix River. A tree was growing on the island, and this place seemed really special. The sight of this tree gracefully swaying in the wind and the sound of the clear St. Croix River that surrounded it just spoke to me.
For me, this tree on the island had a lot of meaning. It wasn’t the biggest tree in the woods; it wasn’t the tallest. It has many trunks that split off in many different directions. However, the birds are attracted to it, and if a person or animal wanted to get to this tree on the island, they would have to make a sacrifice to get there. They would have to wade into the cold waters, step over the stones and sand, and climb the bank to get to the tree. Much like Odin, Christ and other gods, a sacrifice must be made to reach that Tree of Life: it does not come easy or free.
At some point, we hope to get what we put into our efforts and relationships, and hopefully you will feel some of that love come back to you for your efforts, hard work and sacrifices this holiday season.

We had record snowfalls in Minnesota and Wisconsin in 2022-2023. As the snows melt, the runoff makes its way into creeks, streams and rivers which eventually empty into the mighty Mississippi River.
In today’s video, I take you for a ride from Wabasha, Minnesota (Home of Grumpy Old Men) to Pepin, Wisconsin (Home of The Little House in the Big Woods). We get to see how high the Mississippi River and the Chippewa River are on 4/19/2023.
What ISN’T helping are thunderstorms and rainstorms today, tonight and tomorrow. The extra water will only add to the flooding.
I still think I need to get Mother Nature some flowers, chocolate and wine. She isn’t happy with us and is sending a lot of water our way!
We’ll see what happens next!
