As we've watched recent worrying developments in the UN when the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) lead a coalition that removed sexual orientation from UN resolution condemning unjustified executions. The tensions between religion and homophobia surfaced again. Reminding us not only of the stupidity of letting countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran to even be allowed to vote on such matters, but on the apparent danger religion pose on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual community. It is not a new notion among atheist, that including many other minorities, the LGBT community have been subject to horrendous crimes, vilification, discrimination and ridicule. And yet I decided to give a different aspect then my usual "fuck religion". While doing some research about a video I want to do about religion and homophobia I stumbled across a very interesting debate that took place in 2008 and arranged by the Swedish Humanist Association. The debate centers around the question: "Is religion a hotbed for Homophobia" (link down). Now most of the talkers bashed religion like hell, but there was one debater, Anna Karin Hammar who's a priest in the Church of Sweden and a Lesbian and her assertion was that religion can and should be reformed and by doing that it will actually make it a hotbed of tolerance (that'll be the day).
