Al-Ma’mun was the seventh Abbasid caliph, who reigned from 813 until his death in 833. He succeeded his half-brother al-Amin after a civil war, during which the cohesion of the Abbasid Caliphate was weakened by rebellions and the rise of local strongmen; much of his domestic reign was consumed in pacification campaigns. Well educated and with a considerable interest in scholarship, al-Ma'mun promoted the Translation Movement, the flowering of learning and the sciences in Baghdad, and the publishing of al-Khwarizmi's book now known as "Algebra". He is also known for supporting the doctrine of Mu'tazilism and for imprisoning Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, the rise of religious persecution (mihna), and for the resumption of large-scale warfare with the Byzantine Empire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntA3OQSneNQ
The Fastest train ever built | The complete physics of it (June 16, 2021). Magnetically levitated trains are common nowadays. However, the MagLev train the Central Japan Railway Company developed is quite unique and superior to the other trains. Running at more than 600 km per hour, it has achieved the status of ‘fastest train.’ This train uses superconducting magnets, which is why it is called SC MagLev. Once charged with an exciting current, the superconducting magnets of this train produce a circulating DC current and strong magnetic field forever, with zero loss. Let’s understand more about this successfully tested train technology, which is projected to overtake other magnetic levitation technologies by the year 2027. The same technology is poised to connect New York city to Washington DC in just one hour by 2030.
What is the religious meaning of the fluer-de-lis? We see the fleur-de-lis symbol everywhere. It is often used in famous art and architecture, particularly in Catholic churches. It is the logo for the New Orleans Saints football team as well as many other sports teams at the college and high school level. It is a part of the Boy Scouts logo. It can be found on fences, on wall paper, and in clothing. But what is its origin and meaning? Although it may not be obvious in its traditional design, the fleur-de-lis is a stylized flower. "Fleur" means "flower" in French and "lis" means "lily." In fact, the symbol was often used throughout history to refer to the French monarchy. The symbol is also closely linked to the city of Florence in Italy. Its religious origin and meaning is attached to the Blessed Virgin Mary, her husband St. Joseph, or the Blessed Trinity. In classic artwork depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary, she is either holding a white flower or white flowers appear nearby. These flowers are symbols of her purity as virgin and Mother of God. The symbol of the white lily flower is particularly prevalent in art depicting the Annunciation. St. Joseph, Mary's most-chaste spouse, is also often depicted with a white lily nearby to express his purity as well. The stylized design of three flower pedals connected at the bottom allows this symbol to represent the Blessed Trinity as well: one God, three persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). It's worth noting that St. Joan of Arc is almost always shown with the fleur-de-lis, but this is because she was fighting for the kingdom of France. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcMRs8ECK0k
The Smithsonian Natural History Museum houses 147 million specimens — everything from pickled animals to priceless gems to dinosaur bones. But less than 1% of it's on display. The rest is hidden behind the scenes in what's called collections. But they're not just sitting in storage rooms collecting dust. The specimens are actively used for scientific research with real-world benefits, from preventing bird strikes to documenting invasive species. We went inside the collections to see how they acquire, maintain, and protect our Earth's treasures.
DONBASS: BATTLE OF DEBALTSEVO | RT DOCUMENTARY (Mar 2022). The film features episodes of the Donbass war, which took place at Debaltsevo, a crucial strategic point. It became the centre for fierce fighting between the militia and government forces. In summer 2014, fighting began in southeast Ukraine, as Ukraine’s armed forces were tasked to subdue the rebellious regions. The conflict, ongoing for months, was not seen by the Ukrainian government as a civil war but as Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine. But in the streets of Donbass, Ukrainian tanks and APCs encounter angry residents, while regions of Donetsk and Lugansk declared themselves People’s Republics. The escalation began after the events at Maidan, which led to the overthrow of the country’s government, which people in southeastern Ukraine considered a coup d’état. A former officer with Ukraine’s Security Service, Vasily Prozorov, provided secret documents that proved Kiev never intended to negotiate with southeast Ukraine. So it was no coincidence the government was quick to declare the beginning of an anti-terrorist operation. Realising what was coming, the rebel regions created self-defence groups — the Donbass militia. The most vicious fighting between the militia and government forces unfolded in Debaltsevo and its surroundings. Debaltsevo was strategically important to both sides. So what was going on as the militia defended the area, desperately trying to maintain a link between the two rebel capitals?
