How to Calm that Voice in your Head - In meditation , it is often believed, that the point is to stop thinking, quiet or calm the voice in your head. It isn't. In fact, you can't stop it. Any more then you can stop the wind or the waves. Thought is a function of life. Then what is this elusive quiet mind they talk about? Lose interest in it. The way in zen, advaita vedanta and all nondual meditation is to cease giving it any credence. Once you realize that what the mind says is not true, based on false assumptions and repetitive, you simply don't pay it any attention. It is you lack of attention that robs it of its authority, influence and energy. With no energy, like an unplugged fan, it simply slows to a stop. TRUE: Money is bad it fosters greed! ALSO TRUE: Money is good, it provides a great deal of freedom! Huh? How can it be both? This is the nature of our unconscious beliefs and assumptions. We can very easily hold exactly opposite positions at the same time. Weird I know, but there are different aspects of ourselves. The human sense of self is not a consistent, balanced unity. It is a very beautiful yet complex interplay of powerful forces both conscious and unconscious. As long as there are conflicts forces with you there will be a sense of stuckness, a feeling of one foot on the gas and one foot on the brake. I address this very human condition in two ways. 1) Understand what those conflicting forces are and why they are there and 2) Create the inner environment of safety and self-acceptance that harmonizes them. That is in very brief language what I am doing in this introductory workshop.
