The so-called "humanitarian pause" in Israel's assault on Gaza ended just days ago, and already nearly 1,000 Palestinians have been killed.
The Israeli military released a map dividing Gaza into over 2,000 small sections. They say they will notify Palestinians in each of these sections when they plan to bomb or invade it so that the Palestinians can move to a different section. People have compared this to the Hunger Games or similar dystopian stories.
As a result, Palestinians in Gaza continue to be squeezed into smaller and smaller spaces with nowhere to go and not nearly enough food, medicine, and fuel entering the area to sustain human life.
The international community continues to wring its hands without doing anything to stop Israel. In fact, led by the Biden administration in the United States, most of the Western nations continue to stand firmly behind Israel. Biden wants to lift the few small restrictions on arms transfers that do exist between the United States and Israel so that, presumably, the Israeli military can increase its attacks on Gaza.
Because of his blanket support for Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, Joe Biden's approval ratings continue to sink lower with the exact voting blocks he will need in the upcoming presidential election, an election, we are told, that will determine whether U.S. democracy will even exist anymore.
However dark this moment may seem, we can take heart that the mass protests sparked by Israel's brutality are continuing unabated across the United States and the world. The past two months have seen people mobilizing for Palestine in huge numbers.
Jewish Americans, in particular, have turned out in larger numbers than ever before and in far more militant ways. Jewish Voice for Peace and If Not Now have carried out dozens of nonviolent direct actions across the country, shutting down highways, bridges, train stations, and institutions like colleges and even Congressional office buildings.
In this episode, our Palestine News Director, Yumna Patel, speaks with Katie Halper about why Jews should support the Palestinian cause. Katie talks about lessons she's taken from the Holocaust and has a special message for high-profile Jewish Americans like Amy Schumer. Katie is a journalist, activist, and filmmaker who hosts the @TheKatieHalperShow and the podcast @usefulidiots.

Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories extends to Palestinian water resources. The Israeli government and private Israeli companies control and severely restrict Palestinian access to water, leaving the majority of Palestinians in the West Bank without running water, unlike Israeli settlers living (illegally) in the West Bank, who consistently have an abundance of water in the settlements next door.

Israeli forces arrested Munther Amira, a well-known Palestinian activist, on Monday December 18th from his home in the occupied West Bank. In the process, they beat and abused not only him but multiple family members, including his brother, who had to be hospitalized. Munther's family and lawyers fear that due to his activism, he will be arbitrarily thrown in Israeli prison under administrative detention.

Hundreds of military checkpoints scattered around the occupied Palestinian territory are prone to arbitrarily closure without prior warning, restricting the freedom of movement for Palestinians whose daily lives are already defined by a sense of chaos, temporariness and unpredictability.
However, a new smartphone app Azmeh – which translates to mean ‘traffic jam’ in Arabic – has been designed to tackle this very problem.

Earlier this month Israel launched airstrikes across Gaza. In our last episode, Mondoweiss’ Palestine-based staff talked about the historical and political context of this attack. Our Gaza Correspondent, Tareq Hajjaj, spoke movingly about what he experienced first hand during the assault. Listen to it here.
This week we’re excited to share an episode of the North Untapped podcast, hosted by Alex Cosh, a Canadian journalist and managing editor of The Maple. North Untapped is a weekly show about Canadian politics, foreign policy and history.
In this episode, Alex speaks to Michael Bueckert, vice president of Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East about Israel’s recent attack on Gaza, and the Canadian government’s non-response. They also talk about the roots of the current situation in Palestine, and how Canada helps Israel act with impunity.

Transcript:
QUESTION: Thank you. A couple of questions on the Palestinian issue. I wanted to ask you: What is your position on the Palestinian elections? There has been talk that they may be postponed. I don’t believe that you issued any statement regarding the elections, I mean, altogether. So what is your position? Would you understand whether it’s – a decision is taken to postpone it? Would you push for Palestinian – Jerusalemite Palestinians to participate in the process? What is your position?
MR PRICE: Well, our position on this hasn’t changed, and I think we’ve actually discussed this in the briefing room before. The administration has taken a consistent position that the exercise of democratic elections is a matter for the Palestinian government and for the Palestinian people to determine. It’s not up to us. That remains our position. It’s up to the Palestinians to determine how to proceed.
QUESTION: So if, let’s say, Hamas, whom you consider a terrorist organization, wins with a majority in the legislative election, would you recognize that? Because the – past experience has shown that the United States and the rest of the world has taken a very hostile position towards Hamas that resulted in this siege and this semi-division and civil war among Palestinians.
MR PRICE: Of course, our position vis-a-vis Hamas is well known. I’m not going to entertain a hypothetical when it comes to elections for the Palestinian people. That’s up to them to decide.
QUESTION: Okay. Let me ask you a couple of things. There is a UN report on settler violence against Palestinians – are rising drastically. Are you doing anything about rising settler violence?
MR PRICE: Well, we have been consistent in our condemnation of any steps that exacerbate tensions and undercut efforts to advance a negotiated two-state solution, and that includes settlement activity and violence. Again, a two-state solution remains at the center of our approach to this issue, and anything that sets that back is something that we will speak out against and do so consistently.
QUESTION: So you do expect your ally Israel to hold those who perpetrate crimes against the Palestinians, be it settlers or soldiers or security men and women, to be held accountable, as you began today to talk about accountability on yesterday’s verdict?
MR PRICE: Justice, accountability,
