Back when we started the whole “TokyoStreetView” project, we started to cover Tokyo’s most famous, or shall I say iconic locations. But with time not only our gear changed and we decided that it was about time to revisit some of them and give you yet another taste of what they can offer. Today we will guide you through the streets of Akihabara with another one in our “Walking Around” series.
Back in early 2000, Akihabara was really the world´s best place to purchase electronics, computer parts, cameras and so on, but almost two decades later, Akihabara is just the ghost of what it used to be. Sure you can still find some interesting stuff there, but the choice of places where you could go have been cut by a good 60%.
Most of the nice stores that we used to shop at have disappeared and now sell online or have been replaced by a scary number of these cheap tourist traps called Duty Free stores. Still, Akihabara is a place that you have to visit once in your life, but besides the occasional stroll to the Yodobashi Akiba in order to play with the latest cameras or to compare products, goods deals in Japan are now on Amazon.jp or Kakaku.com.

Located near Hamada city, in the southern part of Shimane prefecture, you will find the beautiful secluded Umikurasan Ryuun Temple. Established 1382 near what was once the Misumi Castle district of Hamada city. The Umikurasan Ryuun Temple was later relocated to its current location in 1441 and is now under the care of a young priest and his wife, Shinjo Nohara. Away from civilisation, the Umikurasan Ryuun Temple is the perfect place for anyone looking for peace as well as anyone interested in gorgeous Japanese temple architecture. Indeed, not only is the Umikurasan Ryuun Temple roof covered by Shimane’s unique to the region and famous orange Sekishu tiles, but its main hall also features a beautiful buddhist representation of a protective dragon on the ceiling.

What’s the best way to hide a hideous and monstrous highway intersection: Just cover it up and turn it into a nice, quiet garden!
Planted on top of the roof of the Ohashi Junction, the Meguro Sky Garden is a 400m long spiraling garden constructed on a slope rising from 15 to 35 meters above street level. At its center, the Meguro Sky Garden hides a library, a large football field, and even a car park.
Open from 9am to 9pm, the Meguro Sky Garden is not only a pleasant place to take a break if you are living nearby, but also a nice spot to shoot photos and videos of Fuji-San (Mt Fuji) and the urban landscape.

Chiba Naritasan Shinshoji Temple - 成田山 : Founded in 940 by Kanchō Daisōjō, a disciple of Kōbō Daishi, Naritasan (Narita-san) Shinshoji (Shinsho-ji) is a Shingon Buddhist temple located in central Narita, and near Narita airport.
Despite its age, Naritasan remained a remote and humble temple until Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川 家康) moved his capital to Edo in 1603. Only then did Naritasan Shinshoji, both in fame and size, start to grow. As for today, the temple features many different buildings including the gorgeous two-storey Great Pagoda of Peace located far behind the main hall, as well as a colorful and more traditional three storey pagoda adjacent to the great main hall. Located a short walk from the great main hall you will find the Shakado Hall, Gakudo Hall (under renovation when this video was shot), the Komyodo Hall and even a museum dedicated to Japanese calligraphy!

Date Masamune and his son Date Tadamune have both found their resting place in Zuihoden, where the Date Masamune mausoleum is the centerpiece of Zuihoden.
