Steve Jobs said these lines at the 1997 WWDC Fireside Chat which was 10 years before the iPhone was launched. And as we all know, the world changed after 2007.
A lot of people talk about Steve Jobs as being an amazing marketer... which is obviously widely accepted. But I think that reputation precedes him. I truly believe that he was the greatest product developer that ever lived.
Not because he was extremely technically sound, which is debatable at best. And also, not because his employees said the nicest things about him. He was the greatest product developer that ever lived because he understood Apple's customers very deeply, and placed resources and capital, in designing products and features that the customers absolutely wanted—but didn't even know it.
Of course, a lot of products that Apple made were not his idea, but to take a product to market, and make billions of dollars off of it... well, it requires a lot more than just a great idea.
When Apple acquired NeXT, and Jobs, for $400 million in December, 1996, Apple's market cap was $3 billion which shot up to more than $300 billion by October 2011, during which Steve Jobs passes away. Today, Apple is worth $1.2 trillion dollars and what Steve Jobs says in this talk, is a massive contributor to how Apple changed the world.
Starting with the technology and not the customer, is undoubtedly, one of the greatest sins Entrepreneurs and Product Developers make time and time again. It's like pushing a square peg, into a round hole. And the most annoying thing is that, it can be so effortlessly corrected. Falling in love with the beauty of the tech is fine, but thinking that the customer will give you their hard-earned cash, for the beauty of tech, is uncalled for.
The customer rarely cares about how the product works or who made it, all they care about is the value that it provides. Point Blank Range.
The customer is the ultimate decision maker. At the end of the day, you, as an Entrepreneur and Product Developer, are pushing against that fine line between what your customers accept and what they reject. Nothing is black and and white, everything is grey. 256 shades of grey.
In Zero to One, Peter Theil says, "If you've invented something new but you haven't invented an effective way to sell it - you have a bad business... no matter how good the product." In other words, if you've invented something and no one wants to buy it, you're basically screwed.
Starting with the customers, talking to them, feeling them out and understanding their deepest problems, pushing resources and capital into providing them with a solution, and improving that solution until it reached product-market-fit is what Steve Jobs did really well. And that is the reason he's the real MVP.
