Welcome to Clifford A. Bates, Jr Presents, Reading Plato's Republic. Today we are reading and going over Book I, 327A–328C of Plato's Republic--dealing with Meeting of Socrates and Polemarchus. I am using the translation by Joe Sachs published by Focus Publishers, part of Hackett Publishers. It was published originally at 2007. Sachs is renoun and respected for his excellent translation of Aristotle and started turning to Plato. He taught for 30 years at St. John's College at Annapolis, Maryland. I choose Sach's translation over Allan Blooms, only because while I respect Bloom and his translation, my experience with teaching The Republic is that books translation done in the late 60s, has liguistically has aged and Sach's translation is often crisper to the Modern English Speakers ear. To me it is a coin toss whose translation (Sachs' or Bloom's is more faithful to the Greek--with me siding somewhat more with Bloom) but for purposes of what I am doing here that does not matter. Today we are reading and going over chapter 5 of Book VII of Aristotle's Politics. For our reading for this series of Reading Aristotle's Politics, we are using (on screen) the second edition of Carnes Lord translation of the Politics, which available via. Google Books.
