Ana Kasparian joins Ben Burgis to discuss the Capitol Riots and fallout we’re facing: varying takes from “The Left” regarding how serious the events on January 6, 2021 actually are; the imminent threat of increased pressure on lawmakers to pass legislation that strengthens an already overly invasive surveillance state, broadens an already vague definition of domestic terrorism, and generally weakens citizens’ rights and emboldens the state.
So what can we do? Ana suggests that a starting place can be looking into any dark money that may have played a role in what we now know were some smaller, more organized efforts to harm or hold lawmakers hostage after gaining access to the building. Then there are the lawmakers who we now know were actually involved in planning the event themselves — Ana argues that holding them accountable is crucial, as the GOP has become more and more emboldened to flout the rule of law.

Collette Shade, a grad student and a writer focusing on the intersection of mental health, politics, and capitalism, joins Ben Burgis on the show. She discusses her recent article for “The New Republic,” “Self-Help Hacks at the End of the World.” Collette discusses her focus on the fact that there are no quick hacks to solve mental health issues that have recently been created or exacerbated by the public health and financial crisis in the U.S.
Shade delves into public policy failures that have recently caused a massive national crisis in employment, financial and housing security, access to medical care, etc., that have lead to enormous upticks in mental health issues for Americans. She pushes back on the media narrative that Covid-19 is at the root of this crisis by pointing to the failure of our government to introduce policy that would prevent these different types of stress and insecurity.

Writer Micah Uetricht and producer Forrest Miller join Ben for a discussion about documentary film “Hearts of Darkness,” which covered the ultimately very dramatic, production-problem filled, and drawn out making of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now.” Coppola’s wife Eleanor started the “Hearts of Darkness” project, but
gave her unfinished material to George Hickenlooper and Fax Bahr in 1990. New interviews with cast and crew reinvigorated the project, and the Coppola, Hickenlooper, and Bahr debuted the film at Cannes in 1991 to widespread acclaim.
Ben, Micah, and Forrest discuss the how socialism would deal with jobs like filmmaking — often described as “dictatorial” scenarios, with the director having first, second, and final say in what goes on during a production; and unpredictable working scenarios (long hours due to bad weather, long hours because of bad weather, rampant illness because of the ideal filming conditions for the specific film).
A film like “Apocalypse Now” is a good example of extreme conditions like this, and why decision making by committee would be particularly challenging for the jobs in these scenarios. Most careers in an industry like film are tied to money, and without that (flawed) value-signifier, we would need to think up new ways to allow for participation in similar industries.
