Two Realm’s long night, World in darkness
人天長夜,宇宙黮暗

The two realms are 天 (Deva) and 人 (Human). But according to scholars, this is actually a shorthand representing all six realms of sentient beings that reside in the Kāma-dhātu (desire realm or 欲界).

The long night describes the limitless cycles of Saṃsāra (reincarnation or cycles of death and rebirth) with no hope of enlightenment and therefore no hope of returning to our spiritual pure energy existence (aka Buddhahood).

NOTE: I wonder when Master Tai-Xu talked about darkness (黮暗) in our universe (宇宙), if he was merely talking about darkness as in lack of light. Scientists actually believe there exist dark energy and dark matter which constitute about 85% of our universe. In other words, as humans, we are only capable of detecting less than 15% of our universe. So by darkness, perhaps the Venerable was referring to the vastness of what we cannot see because we are entrapped by our material existence.

Three worlds burning, Boiling distress
三界火宅,眾苦煎迫

As explained in a previous article, the three worlds are the Kāma-dhātu (desire realm or 欲界), the Rūpa-dhātu (form realm or 色界) and the Ārūpa-dhātu (formless realm or 無色界).

Together they are called the Sahā-lokadhātu (Sahā World or 娑婆世界).

Sahā means “to bear” or “to endure”. In other words, the Sahā world is one in which its inhabitants must constantly endure suffering and distress, caused by earthly desires and illusions,

In the Lotus Sutra, the analogy of a house on fire (火宅) is used to represent the three worlds or three realms (三界), reminding us that it is not such a pleasant place and one in which for our spiritual salvation, we must get out ASAP.

Two Truths are all, Three Trainings grow
二諦總持,三學增上

諦 is Sacca in Pali, it means truth.

Here Sacca consists of the totality of two truths, a real truth (真諦) and a conventional truth (俗諦).

The real truth is what one can witness when one becomes enlightened.

The conventional truth is what governs our physical existence (it is the laws of physics).

總持 means all encompassing.

Together 二諦總持 means we must balance between the truths that we can see and the ones we cannot see.

NOTE: This seems obvious until we start to analyze the current turmoils in our society. Those who believe in a God that they cannot see tend not to believe in climate changes that they can see. Similarly, those who strive to study scientifically what they can see are willfully ignorant of the spiritual power of what they cannot see.
