What If...? – Disney / Oops Doughnuts / Feigco (Paul Feig's Wish List)
Sometime in the 2000's, it was reported that an original fantasy comedy entitled Wish List was in development at Walt Disney Pictures, with the screenplay penned by Mrs. Doubtfire scribe Randi Mayem Singer concerning an ambitious career-driven man who lost his inner child at the age of ten, due to the ten wishes he made back then never coming true. It turns out that the coin upon which he wished got stuck in the wishing well and never reached the bottom. When the coin suddenly becomes dislodged, floating to the bottom of the pool, the uptight professional must deal with all ten of his childhood wishes coming true, all at the same time. The film initially had Andy Fickman sitting in the director's chair, in what would've been his fourth film for Disney after The Game Plan, Race to Witch Mountain, and You Again, with Mayhem Pictures' Gordon Gray and Mark Ciardi producing. In 2011, it was announced that Kung Fu Panda writers Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger would be providing a rewrite, specifically retooling script for Academy Award-winning actress Reese Witherspoon, who would star in the film. Furthermore, Fickman would remain onboard mainly as a producer through his Oops Doughnuts Productions shingle. In April of 2012, veteran comedy writer Paul Feig was hired to direct, fresh off of the critical and commercial success of Bridesmaids, with filming scheduled to begin later that year as Disney was eyeing a release sometime in 2013. No doubt many of Feig's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer Theodore Shapiro, music supervisor Erica Weis, costume designer Renée Ehrlich Kalfus, film editors Brent White and Melissa Bretherton, production designer Jefferson Sage, and cinematographer Robert Yeoman. However, no further news ever came of the project, with Feig instead moving on to helm action comedies such as The Heat and Spy for 20th Century Fox. Follow me and ponder the question, "What if...?"

A feature film adaptation of the acclaimed Stephen King psychological sci-fi horror novel The Long Walk, whose story — set in a future dystopian America ruled by a totalitarian and militaristic dictator — concerns the contestants of a grueling annual walking contest, has been in varying stages of development since the late 1980's. The grandmaster of zombie horror, George A. Romero, was first approached to write and direct, having previously worked with King on the EC Comics-influenced horror anthology Creepshow. When that didn't pan out, visionary filmmaker Frank Darabont — having previously adapted King's stories Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist into critically acclaimed films — acquired the rights in 2007, planning on making it as a low-budget experimental arthouse film. When the rights lapsed, they were picked up by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema in the spring of 2018, tapping Zodiac scribe James Vanderbilt to pen the screenplay. Vanderbilt would also produce alongside Bradley J. Fischer and William Sherak through their Mythology Entertainment shingle. A year later, Trollhunter helmer André Øvredal was hired to direct, in what was to be his next project following the Guillermo del Toro-produced Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and the Norse mythology-inspired Mortal. No doubt Øvredal would've also brought onboard two of his frequent collaborators: film editor Patrick Larsgaard and cinematographer Roman Osin. Alas, no further news would ever come of the project. In the fall of 2017, it was announced that DreamWorks Animation and Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions would be co-producing an original animated fantasy horror film entitled Spooky Jack, a look at the creepy world of scary monsters conjured up from the imaginations of children whose story would concern three siblings who move into an eerie new home and discover that all the creatures they've been told don't exist actually do. They soon find themselves having to handle some unusual squatters, from mischievous leprechauns and the elusive Bigfoot to a shy boogeyman that won't stop going bump in the night. The screenplay was penned hy Robert Ben Garant, who previously wrote Jessabelle and The Veil for Blumhouse and also contributed additional dialogue for DreamWorks' Mr. Peabody and Sherman. Turbo's David Soren and Shrek Forever After's Mike Mitchell were reportedly attached to direct the film, with Star vs. the Forces of Evil creator Daron Nefcy serving as co-director. However, two years later after its announcement, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks removed it from their release schedule, and no further news ever came of the project. Paramount Pictures had been developing a live-action feature film adaptation of the Mego toyline and formerly Marvel-owned comic book series Micronauts — which told of a Microverse in which diverse worlds were linked together and in which a power-mad dictator named Baron Karza kills the royal family, taking control, thus a small group of eclectic characters, including a pilot awoken from a centuries-long deep sleep, alien gladiators, and survivors of the coup, band together to form a resistance — for well over a decade. After Hasbro acquired the rights to the property, Paramount entered negotiations to develop the film in 2009, in conjunction with producer J.J. Abrams and his production company Bad Robot. Zombieland and future Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were tapped to pen the script, with their take reportedly being a radically different one than the comics. Tom Wheeler was hired to write a new draft six years later, with Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis joining Abrams as producers through AllSpark Pictures. In 2016, it was announced that Paramount was developing a Marvel-style cinematic universe centering around various Hasbro properties, including Micronauts, G.I. Joe, Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light, M.A.S.K. and Rom, with the writers' room shephered by Academy Award-winner Akiva Goldsman and including such talents as Michael Chabon, Brian K. Vaughan, Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, Cheo Hodari Coker, the team of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, Joe Robert Cole, Jeff Pinkner, Nicole Riegel, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. However, this idea was promptly disbanded after Transformers: The Last Knight was a major domestic flop the following summer, losing over $100 million for Paramount and Hasbro. In the fall of 2019, it was reported that How to Train Your Dragon trilogy and Lilo & Stetch co-helmer Dean DeBlois would be writing and directing the film, in what was to be his live-action directorial debut, with Paramount seeking a family-friendly approach to the material and Greg Mooradian coming aboard as a producer. No doubt DeBlois would've brought on frequent collaborator John Powell to compose the musical score, and it'd certainly be interesting if he'd somehow convince Roger Deakins to also take part in the production. DeBlois' take on the property was scheduled to premiere on June 4, 2021, but thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, Paramount took it off their release schedule in the fall of 2020 and no further news ever came of it, with DeBlois instead now set to make his live-action directorial debut on a new How to Train Your Dragon film. Attempting to get a film based on the popular Marvel comic book character Doctor Strange off the ground prior to 2016 was a lengthy and troubling development, with numerous studios, writers, directors, and producers coming and going on the project, such as Alex Cox, David S. Goyer, Bob Gale, Neil Gaiman, Guillermo del Toro, Michael France, Stephen Norrington, and Chuck Russell. One of the great what-ifs of the development process was a version that was to have been written and directed by horror maestro Wes Craven for the short-lived independent film studio Savoy Pictures, in what would've been his second major superhero film after the 1982 live-action feature film adaptation of the DC comic book character Swamp Thing. Aside from the project being announced in 1992 for a planned 1995 release, little is known about what Craven would've done with the master of the mystic arts, though no doubt many of his frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer J. Peter Robinson, film editor Patrick Lussier, production designer Cynthia Kay Charette, and cinematographer Mark Irwin. Alas, Craven's take on the sorcerer supreme would forever remain unproduced, as he would instead direct the likes of New Nightmare, Vampire in Brooklyn, and Scream. The screenplay that initially got the attention of Hollywood concerning visionary filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan is a grounded, heartfelt emotional drama entitled Labor of Love, which tells the tale of a Philadelphia book store owner named Maurice Parker, who loses his beloved wife Ellen in a tragic car accident caused by a drunk driver. Never big on words, he becomes haunted by the notion that he never properly told his wife just how much he truly loved her. Since she once asked if he would walk across the country for her, he decides to show her posthumously how much he did love her by doing just that, venturing forth on a trek from Philadelphia to Pacifica, California, which was her favorite place in the world. The script was acquired by 20th Century Fox, where it was in varying stages of development since 1993, with stars such as Dustin Hoffman and Denzel Washington and directors such as Sydney Pollack and Wolfgang Petersen coming and going, along with studio-commissioned rewrites by several in-demand scribes including Allison Burnett, Mary Agnes Donohue, and Ron Koslow. Shyamalan fought repeatedly to direct it himself, but the studio wasn't biting. After the commercial disappointments of The Last Airbender and After Earth, Shyamalan returned to the project in early 2014, intending to direct with Bruce Willis starring in the lead role, reteaming with the filmmaker following their collaborations on The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. Joining as producers on the film would be Randall Emmett and George Furla of Emmett/Furla Films, alongside Shyamalan and his Blinding Edge Pictures partner Ashwin Rajan, while Stuart Ford would serve as an executive producer via IM Global. In the spring of 2011, it was announced that visionary filmmaker Robert Zemeckis would be developing a live-action/CGI-hybrid film adaptation of the Chuck Sambuchino humor book How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack: Defend Yourself When the Lawn Warriors Strike (and They Will), a tongue-in-cheek survival guide to help garden gnome-owners prepare for and ward off an imminent invasion from the menacing lawn statues. The project was set up at Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation, intended to be the latter's first adult-themed film, complete with an edgy tone and a PG-13 rating. Two years later, Chad Damiani and J.P. Lavin would adapt the screenplay for Zemeckis to produce — through his ImageMovers banner alongside production partners Jacqueline Levine, Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey — and potentially direct. No doubt many of Zemeckis' frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including casting directors Victoria Burrows and Scot Boland, score composer Alan Silvestri, costume designer Joanna Johnston, visual effects supervisor Kevin Baillie, film editor Jeremiah O'Driscoll, production designer Rick Carter, and cinematographer Don Burgess. In the fall of 2014, it was announced that an adaptation of the Graeme Simsion novel The Rosie Project was in development at Sony's TriStar Pictures, with Matt Tolmach and Michael Costigan producing and the screenplay being adapted by (500) Days of Summer scribes Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. The story concerns Don Tillman, a professor of genetics with Asperger's syndrome who has never been on a second date until he embarks upon The Wife Project, designing a questionnaire to help him find the perfect partner: a punctual, non-drinking, non-smoking woman who will fit in with his regimented lifestyle. When the unorthodox and free-spirited Rosie Jarman appears on the scene, it's clear that she fits none of his selection criteria, and yet she still may just be the perfect match to help turn his life around. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were initially tapped to direct, fresh off of the back-to-back critical and commercial successes of The LEGO Movie and 22 Jump Street, but they wouldn't stay attached for very long, as they would later leave to direct Solo: A Star Wars Story for Lucasfilm, which they would then be fired from late into production — and quickly replaced with reliable journeyman Ron Howard — due to creative differences with co-screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan and producer Kathleen Kennedy. The following year, it was reported that Dazed and Confused helmer Richard Linklater would be taking over for Lord and Miller in the director's chair, and furthermore, Jennifer Lawrence was cast as Rosie while Ryan Reynolds was circling the role of Tillman. No doubt many of Linklater's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including music supervisor Randall Poster, score composer Graham Reynolds, costume designer Kari Perkins, film editor Sandra Adair, production designer Bruce Curtis, and cinematographer Shane F. Kelly. However, in the fall of 2015, the film saw the departures of both Lawrence and Linklater, and future attempts to get the project off the ground with directors such as Ben Taylor and Steve Falk and Henry Cavill starring as Tillman also haven't panned out. An effects-driven epic based around the legendary folk hero Sinbad had been in development at Sony's Columbia Pictures since the early 2000's. Academy Award-nominated director John Singleton was first tapped to direct in 2001, from a screenplay initially penned by Tedi Sarafian and revised by the husband-and-wife team of Cormac and Marianne Wibberley. Their take on the material — said to be in the vein of The Mummy meets Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon — was described as "an eighth century Raiders of the Lost Ark on steroids." Four years later, Singleton was replaced with The Fast and the Furious and xXx helmer Rob Cohen, with C. Gaby Mitchell coming onboard for another rewrite of the script and Keanu Reeves attached to star as the titular sailor, with the story concerning him and his shipmates setting sail on their eighth voyage, embarking on a quest to find the Lamp of Aladdin. Along the way, they come across a beautiful empress and do battle against fantastical creatures and a rebellious Chinese general who threatens the kingdom with his supernatural powers. Three years later, Cohen was replaced with Hairspray helmer Adam Shankman, who would also join as an executive producer alongside Jennifer Gibgot and Garrett Grant through their Offspring Entertainment shingle, Cohen, Dwight Williams, and Toby Jaffe. Neal H. Moritz would be producing through his Original Film banner, along with Singleton through New Deal Entertainment, while Black Swan scribe John J. McLaughlin was hired for yet another script rewrite. No doubt many of Shankman's frequent collaborators would've also joined in, including score composer John Debney, costume designer Rita Ryack, film editors Michael Tronick and Emma E. Hickox, and cinematographer Bojan Bazelli. However, after McLaughlin's hiring in 2012, no further news would ever come of the project. Follow me and ponder the question, "What if...?"
