What does manipulation do to the spine? Or what does it do for back pain? Now, in short, if you've got a stiff joint, the manipulation that a chiropractor or an osteopath might do just frees up a stiff joint, it's not putting anything back, it's doing nothing like that. It's just freeing up the stiff joints. And this actually can be really, really helpful. If you've got an injury down here, where this bottom part of the joint of the lower back is injured and damaged. And we've got some stiffness up here, actually releasing this stiffness and getting these joints moving again, with a little bit of 'oompf', can just help the whole section work a little bit better and take some stress off here while it's healing. And for less severe injuries, that can actually be really, really helpful.
But when you start looking into a lot of research, it says, Well, yeah, you can do joint manipulation, but it actually works better in combination with other things. And this is the one of the things that we do here at the clinic. Now we do some element of joint manipulation, albeit we use an impulse adjusting instrument where we're a little bit more specific and a little bit more direct with our applicator and you can read that about that on the section of our website. So we do do an element of manipulation, but just not the traditional way. But we also use the other therapies to actually enhance that process. So we do some manipulation to the joints in the spine they're safe and actually a much more patient friendly way, much more gentle. And then we also do some vibration work. So we'll work on these muscles either side of the spine we'll work on these muscles around the hips and round down into the legs because we know that actually yes getting this joint working a lot better, is fantastic. But also loosening off the muscles that may be contributing to stiffness is even better. And also loosening off some of the muscles down in the group region can allow the hips to move

Thank you for joining us for today’s livestream where we talked about chronic back pain and the exercises that are going to be the most beneficial for this type of problem. Anyone can injure their back regardless of how healthy or active they are, but why do sometimes these problems become chronic?
Sometimes we can see people with worse injuries, recover quicker than someone with not such a severe problem. You may have a flare-up that continues to crop up from time to time, we would still class this problem as chronic as it likely didn’t heal properly to begin with.
The role of your spine is to provide a solid base of support and weight-bear. We can injure our backs by repeatedly adopting poor posture or by lifting something with poor form. When your lower back becomes compressed. If you tear a ligament, and do the correct things that help the problem to heal - it can take a bit of time to return back to its normal strength but you will get the integrity back over the next few months. What frequently happens is that people are spending excessive amounts of time sitting or doing knee hugs to help it feel better, but this continually weakens the area. Your body will still try to heal itself but you’ll start getting scar tissue like if you were to continually reopen a cut on your hand.
Not understanding the mechanism of the injury can cause the injury to become chronic. A lot of things affect the healing of your injury, such as being overweight, smoking, inactivity, alcohol consumption, no muscle mass, poor diet, poor movement habits and hobbies that encourage poor movement patterns.
The questions we answered today were:
Is there such a thing as non-specific back pain?
It’s essentially diagnosed by people who aren’t sure what the problem is. Doesn’t have any specific characteristics to it.
Does a report of ligament thickening imply serial ligamentous injury?
If there’s been constant stress on it then it will thicken, like with regular scar tissue.
Do ligaments return to their original strength?
Yes, eventually it can just take some time.

What we do day to day is usually the reason we have back pain in the first place (poor usage over time).

In this video we are talking about whether you should you avoid doing any exercise to help with your back pain? Depending on which area of the world you are in, there are different cultural norms for what you should/shouldn't do if you are suffering with back pain. Whilst the general consensus seems to be resting a back injury, some people go as far as laying flat on the floor for back pain until the pain goes. But is this really the right course of action?
In our experiencing this is the wrong thing to do for back pain relief, and you should not avoid exercise to help your back pain, in fact rehabilitation through a controlled, safe routine is the best way to being to heal your back pain. Weight bearing and weight training for back pain is the right course of action to help strengthen your body to help support the spinal column and help it under load, and walking around is great too for back pain.

Thank you for tuning in for today’s livestream where we took you on a tour of the clinic so that you can see the equipment we use for the treatment we do here.
The first room we showed you was the IDD decompression treatment. This is a treatment that uses a small percentage of the bodyweight to gently take the pressure off your spine, to help relieve any compression in the neck or lower back.
In the second room, we showed you our laser and vibration therapies. These two are used in combination with the IDD to help relieve muscle stiffness and soreness, as well as to flush the injured area with circulation and improve the healing rate.
These treatments draw comparisons with the Back In Shape membership area as it has been designed with this in mind. For the decompression treatment, our towel stretch is its equivalent as it helps to take the pressure away from the spine. For our laser treatment, using ice is a good equivalent as it helps to reduce inflammation and improve circulation as the area heats back up to room temperature again. For the vibration therapy, as this helps loosen off the muscles, the stretches we give you are the best alternative as it can reduce stiffness in the legs and take the strain away from your lower back.
If you come into the clinic, we’d then recommend strengthening to be done alongside treatment in order to give you the long-term benefits, while in the Back In Shape membership area we would recommend pursuing the Phase 2 exercises, as these will start to strengthen your body.
The questions we answered today were:
Can the IDD therapy be used on the neck?
Yes, it does the same to the lower back as it does to the neck. Essentially it gently takes the pressure off the injured sections of those areas.
How does imaging impact the types of treatment you would choose?
There may be cases in which you need to be a little more cautious with treatment if the patient has a particular type of problem - something like a spondylolisthesis where you need to tread more carefully. Otherwise, it allows us to have an insight into how the problem has occurred so we can recommend the relevant strengthening.
