But the reality of that didn’t hit home until the storm was nearly upon us. Check out this video to see if we were able to escape some seriously bad weather! Before any of that, we were still enjoying the coastal town of Sayulita whose roads put Frankie’s van driving skills to the test. They’re narrow and the other drivers are unpredictable. But the energy of this place is worth it! After parking the van, we got out on foot to check out the scene. Pleasant plazas, artwork, good food, and shopping - what more could we ask? Oh yeah, a lively beach! Despite our good time, we had to keep an eye on the weather. A hurricane was bearing down on us and there was no place we could go to avoid it completely. After weighing our options, we decided to head for higher ground. Turning inland and driving the four hours to Guadalajara seemed like the safest bet. A large part of van life is making safe decisions. Staying close to the coast during a hurricane just wasn't worth the risk. Van life also often means making the best of a less-than-ideal situation. While heading into the highlands, we got the chance to stop at the pueblo mágico (magical town) of Jala. This old town has done an amazing job preserving its historic architecture and overall vibe. From there, the road took us to the town of Tequila, which is famous for the fiery drink of the same name. But did we get there before the storm could catch up to us?
