When you cut a branch from a tree, be careful to do it the right way - first thing is to relieve the weight of the branch. This means cutting further away from the trunk as your first cut. In this video, I show you how to make those first couple of cuts, and I also discuss the use of pruning sealant (or rather, advise not to use it!).

Have you ever wondered about buying (or selling) cuttings or scion wood by mail order? In this interview style video, I'll talk to Mark from Dingdong's Garden @dingdongsgarden - they've been selling stems for hobbyist growers who want to try out propagation, and collect some fun an interesting varieties along the way!
Thanks to Mark and Dingdong for taking the time to discuss and for providing the footage to go along with the conversation. You can check out their current offerings at www.dingdongsgarden.com

Edible plants everywhere! Mark Stephens runs a local backyard nursery business where he focuses his assortment on fruits, nuts, berries, tubers - anything edible and tasty, that's what Mark grows and sells. I'd like to thank Mark for taking the time to show me around his plant collection and also for giving an insight into how he runs his business.

If you're in a job you don't love, I can relate. I spend 20 years in corporate jobs, managing meaningless things. I hear from a lot of people who would like to step away from these kinds of jobs, and get back to farming (veggies, flowers, animal husbandry). My kick is ornamental landscape plants. Whichever route interests you, I think there's something special about local agriculture. Customers are looking to connect with and reward local growers - and I think this makes for nearly unlimited opportunities for specialty farms and nurseries. In this video, I'll tell you four lessons I learned while transitioning towards the nursery business, and I hope you might find them helpful if you're considering making the leap.

What I call spring rose pruning is usually in late winter. It's the "structural" pruning where I take off more stems than any other time of year. Of course I removing quite a few stems in poor condition: dead, diseased, damages and thin. But when I take off thick healthy stems for size, shape or thinning purposes, it can feel a bit wasteful. Here's an option: try the same hardwood cutting technique I showed in my previous video here: https://youtu.be/4NONMYSK2h0?si=uKtP6Of01dv1GY27 It's the same method if you take them in early vs. late winter.
Also, a little show and tell!

Whether pruning or for propagation, your plants will benefit from clean, sharp blades. This video will cover basic sharpening, disinfection and tightening adjustment for bypass pruners (secateurs) and loppers, particularly those styled after the Felco models. I use a carbide sharpener because it's fast and relatively easy. I clean with household hard surface cleaners like Lysol or Clorox wipes (but *not* with bleach).

Found footage! I'm not sure what I planned for these clips when I shot them, but the audio was blown from wind noise. I see all the work in progress: pillar supports and archways not yet grown-over, bare patches (and crowded patches), roses in all stages and ages. Ready to go another round!

Cutting the fresh flowers from your lavender plants can provide a number of benefits: obviously, it's nice to have the cut stems for culinary use, fragrance or floral display, but a moderate prune after blooming can result in another flush of flowers, and also improve the quality and extend the life of your lavender plants. In this video I'll quickly discuss deadheading of lavender and then also give some other general growing an planting tips as I dig in my new lavender bed.

It was my pleasure to visit Exemplar Horticulture this week. Exemplar is a specialty producer of ornamental grasses, perennials and a whole range of other interesting plants. Julia from the growing team led an overview & demo of their grass division process on calamagrostis (feather reed grass).
Many thanks to the owners, Paula & Greg for having me out to the nursery for this demo and tour. I'm also grateful to Julia & Rajpal for the tour and demo, and everyone else on the team who welcomed me onto the site.
Incidentally, for those who follow my channel, Paula & Greg were the managers who hired me straight from horticulture school many years ago. I worked under their leadership for many years (at a different nursery). It's exciting to see how far they've taken their new venture, and I can't wait to see what else they'll do with it.

Roses are not generally tropical plants, but thanks to the inclusion of a couple of sub-tropical species in the breeding of modern roses, many can take the higher temperatures and moisture of lower latitudes. In this video, I discuss managing roses in times of high temperature, humidity, rainfall - and I also recommend some roses that perform well in tropical gardens.
