Cambodia is the smallest country on the Indochina Peninsula, sandwiched between Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. The country broke away from France in the 1950s, enjoying a golden period of independence until the 1960s, when it was drawn into the neighboring Vietnam War and overrun by American forces. The communist Khmer Rouge overthrew the American presence in the country in 1975, renaming it Kampuchea, and the years that followed saw the deaths of over one million people due to starvation or disease as the country shifted to communist rule. However, in 1991, after decades of struggle and Vietnamese intervention, Cambodia was protected by the United Nations through one of the largest-ever peacekeeping operations. In 1999, the newly formed constitutional monarchy joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The country now has a population of nearly 16 million people, with the majority living in rural areas outside of the country's major cities. The nation's capital, Phnom Penh, is the most populous city in the country, located at the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers, and is home to Cambodia's royal palace. The country's economy is still largely based on agriculture, with rice being the most important crop. However, Cambodia's aging infrastructure, lack of proper irrigation systems, and remaining landmines from previous wars limit the amount of land available for cultivation. Cambodia's forestry sector is also important to the country's economy, but illegal logging has become a problem in the country, which has one of the world's highest deforestation rates.
