The people of the earth would rather stay in one place than fill it as God said to do and they want to "make a name" for themselves. God says that with one language they will be able to do basically anything they intend to do (the implication being this is not good), so he confuses their language and everyone scattered... like they should have done in the first place. Death in this world is that unavoidable reminder of what is important. It humbles the most arrogant. It gives relief at the end of what can sometimes be a weary journey. It also reminds us that there is more than this broken world.
