Catholic Drive Time - 877-757-9424 Date – Thursday, June 15th - 2023 – St. Germaine Cousin St. Germaine Cousin, born in 1579 in the village of Pibrac near Toulouse, France, led a life filled with suffering and humiliation. Afflicted with a deformed and partially paralyzed hand, as well as poor health, she was subjected to mistreatment and cruelty by her stepmother. Germaine lived in a small, cramped space under the stairs of the family barn, sleeping on leaves and twigs with only black bread and water for sustenance. Despite her hardships, Germaine found solace in her unwavering faith. She spent her days tending to the family's flock, praying fervently and attending Mass whenever she could. Her devotion to God remained unshakeable, even in the face of ridicule from villagers who mocked her misery. She never complained or sought relief from her difficult circumstances, maintaining a serene and composed demeanor. Germaine's trust in God was rewarded with numerous miracles. When she needed to cross a raging stream to attend Mass, the waters miraculously parted, allowing her safe passage. Her flock thrived under her care, never causing any harm or straying, and her sheep were the healthiest and best-looking in the area. On one occasion, when accused of stealing bread, her stepmother discovered a bouquet of beautiful and fragrant flowers in Germaine's apron instead. Her reputation for performing miracles spread throughout the region, and even two Popes, Pius VII and Pius IX, sought her intercession to free them from captivity. Despite the fame and recognition she garnered, Germaine remained humble and unaffected. In the end, Germaine's life came to a peaceful close. Found dead on her simple pallet at the age of 22, she left behind a legacy of sanctity and humility. In a century marked by vainglory and self-love, she embodied the opposite virtues of humility and selflessness. Despite her lowly status and the cruelty she endured, she remained steadfast in her devotion to God and accepted her sufferings with grace. Her life teaches us to endure persecution and humiliation without resentment, to trust in God's providence, and to embrace humility as a path to heavenly glory. As counter-revolutionaries, we can draw inspiration from St. Germaine's example.
