Some of the most exciting research and teaching in the field of German Studies is being done on genre fiction, including detective fiction, science fiction, and what is often called poplit, to name but a few. Such non-canonical literature has long been marginalized by the German tradition of Bildung and the disciplinary practice of German literary studies (Germanistik). Even today, when the examination of non-canonical texts is well established and uncontroversial in other academic contexts, such texts remain understudied in German. And yet, the trend toward German Studies and cultural studies approaches within the field has raised considerable interest in theanalysis of genre fiction, resulting in both a great deal of new scholarship and a range of new courses. This first broad treatment of German genre fiction brings together innovative new scholarship, foregrounding themes of gender, environmentalism, and memory. It is an ideal companion to research and teaching. Written in accessible English, it speaks to a wide variety of disciplines beyond German Studies. Contributors Bruce B. Campbell, Ray Canoy, Kerry Dunne, Sonja Fritzsche, Maureen O. Gallagher, Adam R. King, Molly Knight, Vibeke Rutzou Petersen, Evan Torner, and Ailsa Wallace. **

Read the Bldg Blog interview with Mary Beard about the Wonders of the World series(Part I and Part II) Byron and Hitler were equally entranced by Romes most famous monument, the Colosseum. Mid-Victorians admired the hundreds of varieties of flowers in its crannies and occasionally shuddered at its reputation for contagion, danger, and sexual temptation. Today it is the highlight of a tour of Italy for more than three million visitors a year, a concert arena for the likes of Paul McCartney, and a national symbol of opposition to the death penalty. Its ancient history is chockfull of romantic but erroneous myths. There is no evidence that any gladiator ever said Hail Caesar, those about to die... and we know of not one single Christian martyr who met his finish here. Yet the reality is much stranger than the legend as the authors, two prominent classical historians, explain in this absorbing account. We learn the details of how the arena was built and at what cost we are introduced to the emperors who sometimes fought in gladiatorial games staged at the Colosseum and we take measure of the audience who reveled in, or opposed, these games. The authors also trace the strange afterlife of the monument--as fortress, shrine of martyrs, church, and glue factory. Why are we so fascinated with this arena of death? **

This book provides a comprehensive survey of Soviet economic development from 1917 to 1965 in the context of the prerevolutionary economy. In these years the Soviet Union was transformed from a predominantly agrarian country into a major industrial power. These developments resulted in great economic achievements at great human cost. Professor Davies discusses the inherent faults and strengths of the Soviet system, paying particular attention to the major controversies, and presents the results of recent Russian and Western research.ReviewWe are quite fortunate that a scholar of Davies maturity and depth has taken the time to write such and accessible and useful book for those who do not have the time or inclination to get into the specialized literature. Samuelson asks--what is the most reasonable possible conception of the doctrine of revelation found in the sources of the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) in the light of modern challenges from academic studies of evolutionary psychology, analytic philosophy, and biblical history? The attitudes of disgruntled common citizens become clear in these documents. Politically unsophisticated, unimpressed by the liberal-minded intelligentsia, resentful that Soviet goods were being exported while people at home were deprived and hungry, the everyday critics were sometimes caught in acts of sedition. Their crimes were cursing their bosses, desecrating symbols of Soviet power, penning anonymous letters and leaflets, writing naive anti-Soviet treatises, and joining proto-political organizations. This book covers the gamut, from the death of Stalin to elections to individual and group acts of defiance. --Book Jacket.
