HBO has just killed the Game of Thrones prequel. Game of Thrones fans just can't seem to catch a break. It's come to light that HBO has scrapped plans for a prequel series based on the works of author George R.R. Martin. This prequel, which was going to take place thousands of years before the events of the hit fantasy series, was set to include a massive cast led by Naomi Watts. After filming a pilot, the premium cable network decided not to move forward with this particular show. However, the world of Westeros will likely live on at HBO, in some form or another. Details surrounding the situation remain scarce at this time. According to several reports, the show is no longer happening and HBO has yet to officially comment on the matter. Jane Goldman had developed the show alongside George R.R Martin. Goldman reportedly told the cast the news via email. Other members of the ensemble cast included Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Josh Whitehouse (Northern Soul), Denise Gough (People, Places and Things), Jamie Campbell Bower (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones), Sheila Atim (Girl From the North Country), Ivanno Jeremiah (Doctor Who), Georgie Henley (The Spanish Princess), Alex Sharp (How To Talk To Girls At Parties) and Toby Regbo (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald). Game of Thrones concluded its eight-season run on HBO earlier this year. The series, created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, became one of the biggest shows on the planet, prompting the network to look toward a continuation via a spin-off long before the final run of episodes made it to air. At one point, HBO had as many as five different spin-offs in development. The one from Goldman and Martin was the one they felt most confident moving forward with. The pilot was shot over the summer and, for reasons that will surely become clear in due time, it will go no further. Undoubtedly, the response to Game of Thrones season 8 must be a consideration. It's no secret at this point that the show's final season served to disappoint many fans of the series. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have taken a lot of heat for how things wrapped up in the ensuing months. Though, it hasn't hampered their careers much, as they signed a massive overall deal with Netflix recently.
