Band I: Ursprung und Organisation der Inquisition Band II: Die Inquisition in den verschiedenen christlichen Ländern Band III: Die Tätigkeit der Inquisition auf besonderen Gebieten Die Inquisition wurde im Mittelalter als inquisitio haereticorum (Ketzerinquisition) bzw. als inquisitio haereticae pravitatis (Inquisition gegen ketzerische Verderbtheit) bezeichnet. Seit den 1240er Jahren wurde die Aufgabe der Inquisitoren als Amtstätigkeit begriffen und diese in der Folge mehrfach als officium inquisitionis bzw. sanctum officium (heiliges Amt) bezeichnet, weshalb seither gelegentlich auch von der Heiligen Inquisition gesprochen wird.
