We can use a model to multiply a whole number by a decimal by modeling the decimal factor, then repeating the model by the same number of times as the whole number factor. We use a model with 100 squares, each column contains 10 squares. When an entire model is shaded, it represents the whole number, 1. Each small square represents one hundredth of the model, and each column represents one tenth of the model. Multiplying a decimal by a whole number is similar to multiplying a whole number by a whole number. Both products will have the same digits, but there's a decimal point in the decimal equation. We draw a quick picture to solve decimal multiplication problems. We see what happens when our product is greater than 1. Addition and subtraction of decimals uses regrouping just like whole numbers. When we have more than 9 for a place value, we need to regroup to the next greater place value. When we don't have enough to subtract from, we regroup from the next greater place value.
