## A Basic Usage of youtube-dl on Debian Linux
In Debian, dont use the package in the repos, It's better to install like this:
Install via this method:
1. `sudo curl -L https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/youtube-dl -o /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl`
2. `sudo chmod a+rx /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl`
If you do not have curl, you can alternatively use wget:
1. `sudo wget https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/youtube-dl -O /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl`
2. `sudo chmod a+rx /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl`
You may need to install the package `python-is-python3` if you run into trouble
## Basic usage
`youtube-dl -f best -ciw -o "%(title)s.%(ext)s" -v `
Here we flag to get a higher resolution. The full command I use is
`youtube-dl -f "bestvideo[height>=720]+bestaudio/best" -ciw -o "%(title)s.%(ext)s" -v `
### Note: If you are downloading a lot of videos, you should change directories to the directory where you want to save the videos before you start downloading them.
> -f, --format FORMAT
> video format code. The special name "best" will pick the best quality.
>
> -c, --continue
> force resume of partially downloaded files
>
> -i, --ignore-errors
> continue on download errors, for example to skip unavailable videos in a channel
>
> -w, --no-overwrites
> do not overwrite files
>
> -o, --output
> Output filename template, this example functions similarly to the old --title option
>
> -v, --verbose
> print various debugging information
Example:
To get audio from videos
`youtube-dl --extract-audio --audio-format mp3 -o "%(title)s.%(ext)s" `
### To get mp3s from a playlist:
`youtube-dl --extract-audio --audio-format mp3 -o "%(title)s.%(ext)s" `
To get all videos on a channel:
`youtube-dl -f "bestvideo[height>=720]+bestaudio/best" -ciw -o "%(title)s.%(ext)s" -v `
