We're Shipping Our Van to Mexico! It’s not that simple taking the ferry from the Baja Peninsula to mainland Mexico. For us, the ferry ride resulted in what could be our worst night of van life. Watch this video to learn from our experience and decide if a sea voyage is right for you! The first thing to do when booking on the TMC ferry line is to head to their office in La Paz where you’ll pay for your tickets. To bring a van to mainland Mexico, you’ll need a temporary import permit (TIP) which you can only get at the bank. We also needed copies of our tourist permits (FMMs) and an inspection of the van. You could do this on the day of your voyage. However, we were glad we did it ahead of time to avoid the stress of dealing with all the bureaucracy on a travel day. The day of the ferry trip arrives and we’re already having problems. The solar isn’t charging and Frankie is at a loss for how to fix it in time to avoid a mad dash to the ferry terminal. Once at the port, there’s another quick inspection, a trip to the ticket office, and then we’re on the boat. Watch us squeeze into the tightest parking spot ever! Exploring the ferry was fun. We got to watch a movie in an airconditioned theater, eat a hearty meal, and enjoy the views as the ship got underway. However, when the sun went down and it was time for sleep, things got rough. Let’s just say that a rocking boat and plus seasickness does not lead to a restful night. Fortunately, we got our AC working or we would have roasted in the night.
