Battle of Ortona 1943 / Part 2 - Little Stalingrad
From December 21st, two 1st Canadian Infantry Divisions, 2nd Brigade Battalions, the Loyal Edmonton Regiment, and a Canadian Seaforth Highlanders began with the advance through the narrow streets of Ortona. Soon they were engaged in a fearsome street fighting against men of the 2nd Battalion, the 3rd Parachute Regiment, 1st Parachute Division. Because the fighting raged for every street, building and room, the battle became known as "Italian Stalingrad".

Successful American actions on Marshall Islands demanded continued pressure on Japanese defences and the launch of the next major operation in the Central Pacific area. Urging by the Air Force, the Navy turned its attention to Guam, Tinian and Saipan, the three largest islands in the Marianas. First in line for the invasion was the second largest island in the archipelago, Saipan.

In the predawn darkness on July 10th, 1943, thousands of Allied soldiers, in the largest amphibious operation in history up until that time, stormed the shores of Sicily or what Winston Churchill called a soft underbelly of Europe, which proved to be much softer than anyone anticipated.

The German offensive in Ardennes caught the Americans by surprise. However, the American troops quickly recovered from the initial shock and put out stiff resistance against forces many times their size. Right on the path of the German 5th Panzer Army, holding over the 20 kilometres long line east of Bastogne, were three regiments of the 28th Infantry Division. For three days, the men of the 28th Division resisted an overwhelming attacking force buying time before reinforcements arrived to prepare the defense of Bastogne.

The sacrifice of the 110th Regiment and the Combat Command Reserve from the 9th Armoured Division, which fought fiercely on the roads to Bastogne, slowing the German panzer columns, enabled the arrival of American reinforcements in Bastogne. By December 19th, the 101st Airborne Division and elements of the 10th Armoured Division had arrived. Armour immediately went to nearby villages to stop the German advance while the paratroopers formed an all-around perimeter around Bastogne. Two days later, the Germans bypassed the town, and The Siege of Bastogne began.

The Allied decision to invade Sicily was made in mid-January during the Casablanca Conference when the Joint Chiefs of Staff agreed to continue the commitment in the Mediterranean, hoping that by maintaining the momentum, they would relieve the German pressure on Russians at the Eastern Front. And although it may appear that the Allied decision to invade Sicily was easy, straightforward, and self-explanatory, it was not the case. Despite differences of opinion among the Allies and difficulties during the planning process on May 21st, 1943, the final draft of the Allied invasion of Sicily, code-named Operation Husky, was approved.

After being briefly overshadowed by the naval battle of the Philippine Sea, American ground troops continued to move forward, pushing the Japanese defenders north, fighting fiercely across hills and ravines of the rugged terrain of central Saipan. In the days of constant struggle, the American troops would achieve a costly victory in a decisive battle of the Pacific offensive.

In September 1944, US Navy's Pacific Fleet moved on to the next objective of their island-hopping campaign, the Palaus islands. According to the plan designated as Operation Stalemate II, the American troops were to take the archipelago's two southernmost islands, Peleliu and Angaur. On September 15th, the landing of marines from the US 1st Marine Division on the island's beaches marked the beginning of the battle of Peleliu, which would prove to be one of the hardest and most brutal battle ever to be fought in the Pacific theatre.
