Coyotes have an expansive range, which means hunters use very diverse tactics. Some snipe them at long range across open fields. Others like to call them in and pick them off at close range. That makes crowning the best coyote cartridge a nearly impossible task. There really is no “perfect” cartridge for hunting these wily canine predators. However, some cartridges are better suited to the task than others. If you’re searching for an effective dog-dropper, you’ve come to the right place.
In this episode, Chris and Dave discuss the ins and outs of the most popular coyote hunting cartridges in current production. All of the options on our list have proven their worth against what many consider a nuisance species. Any of these cartridges will make short work of any coyotes or varmints that plague your property!

It wasn't that long ago that everyone swore by "the bigger, the better" when it came to shotguns.
However, with a few recent introductions, small-bore shotguns are generating a lot of attention from shooters and hunters, who initially dismissed them.
But which one is best when comparing the 28 gauge vs. 410?
Overall, the 410 is a great option for a new shooter. It has low recoil and there are tons of single shot or pump-actions for the shell. However, it's not cheap and is actually more expensive than the 28 Gauge.
The 28 Gauge is an all but forgotten shotgun cartridge, as the 20, 12, and 410 are the big three when it comes to smooth bores. Although a lot lighter than a 20 gauge, the 28 gauge is an excellent choice for upland game hunting, grouse, pheasants, and doves. It might be a little light for ducks but with proper loads you could probably make it work. However, ammo is in short supply for the 28 ga as most hunters have dropped it in favor of the 20 ga.
Both rounds make excellent options for training young shooters, as they have low recoil and are easy to handle. However, we have to err on the side of the 410 for this one, as there are a lot of different ammo options available for it and it is considerably easier to find.

When one discusses the real reason for the Second Amendment – the right of citizens to defend themselves against a potentially tyrannical government – inevitably someone points out the stark difference in firepower between a guerrilla uprising in the United States and the United States government itself.
This is not a trivial observation. The U.S. government spends more on the military than the governments of China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, India, France, United Kingdom, and Japan combined. Plus, the potential of a tyrannical government is arguably upon us – with the federal government spying on its own citizens, militarizing local police departments with equipment and tactics from the War on Terror, and repeatedly searching Americans, which desensitizes them to this invasive process.
There is much historical precedent, however, for guerrilla uprisings defeating more powerful enemies. For instance, the Cold War saw both superpowers brought to their knees by rural farmers – for the Soviets, their adventure in Afghanistan against the Mujahideen, and for the United States, the Vietnam War against the Viet Cong.
In both cases, nuclear weapons could have been used against the guerrilla uprising, but were not. Even assuming the use of nuclear weapons from the position of total desperation, it’s hard to imagine they would have made much of a difference in the final outcome of either conflict. Unlike the invading armies, the local resistance enjoyed both broad-based support as well as knowledge of the local terrain.
Now imagine such a scenario in the United States. You wouldn’t be the first person to do so. From Red Dawn to James Wesley, Rawles’ Patriots series, there is a relatively long-standing tradition of American survival literature about the hoi polloi resisting the tyranny of big government, either before or after a collapse.
For the purposes of this article, consider what a domestic American terrorist or freedom fighter (after all, the label is in the eye of the beholder) organization based on the militia movement would look like in open revolt against the United States government. In the spirit of levity, we’ll call them the “Hillbilly Viet Cong.” They would

Deciding on the caliber of your self-defense or concealed carry handgun can be a challenging task if you haven’t done your research. Although there are many options on the market like 10mm Auto and 357 SIG, the three most popular pistol calibers are 9mm Luger, 40 S&W, and 45 ACP.
It’s not an insignificant choice, as anyone purchasing a handgun wants the best caliber for personal defense since this is what most pistols and revolvers are used for.
Sadly, there is a lot of misinformation about the effectiveness of handgun ammo that might sway a new gun owner into a caliber that they end up hating. This is where we come in!
Let’s separate fact from fiction concerning stopping power for the Great Trifecta of self-defense handgun cartridges.
Spoiler Alert: The ideal caliber is the one you shoot best. Therefore, when you are ready to drop your Benjamins on a new EDC handgun, whether it be a Glock 17, Springfield XD, Sig Sauer P226, or Colt 1911, you’ll be confident that you have the best self-defense sidearm on your hip.
The question comes down to magazine capacity vs stopping power. Stopping power is a bit of a dirty word on the podcast as it is something that is completely unquantifiable. However, the bullet diameter of a 45 is significantly larger than a 40 than a 9mm. That being said, the person who brings the most bullets to the fight often wins a prolonged engagement.
The 9mm also has the added bonus of having light recoil, which is a lot easier for small framed shooters to handle. This is one reason why so many law enforcement agencies are switching back to the 9mm from the 40 S&W.
Your choice of personal defense handgun cartridge lies deeply in what you prefer and your abilities as a shooter. Many CCW permit holders prefer 9mm for the mag capacity and lower recoil in a subcompact, but there are others who have no problem carrying a 1911 on their hip all day. It all just depends on what you like to carry and what you are comfortable EDC'ing all day long.

When it comes to debates at your local gun store, your grandfather’s porch, or around the fire at your deer camp, there is none more heated than 223 vs 308. The 223 Remington and the 308 Winchester are the two most popular centerfire rifle cartridges across North America, Europe, and the world.
Ever since the 223 Rem replaced the 308 Winchester as the U.S. Military standard issue cartridge in the 1960s, the debate has raged on hotter than a +P+ 44 Magnum round as to which of these two rifle cartridges is better.
Although I doubt we will solve the 308 vs 223 caliber crisis in this article, I am confident that you will learn which is the right NATO round for your needs.
The 223 is perhaps the most prolific centerfire rifle round on the planet. Its low recoil and high muzzle velocity give it a flat trajectory and make it an incredibly easy round to shoot accurately. With an effective range around 600 yards, the 223 has been the frontline battle cartridge for the U.S. Military for about 20 years and has proven itself in the battlefields of Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
However, the long range prowess of the 308 cannot be denied. As the 308 has been the primary sniping round for law enforcement and the military longer than the 223 has been in service. It is also one of the most popular big game hunting cartridges across the globe. Hunters love the power and versatility than the 308 provides and allows them the power of the 30-06 Springfield in a short action hunting rifle. Although the 308 was considered too high recoil from frontline use, it is been a consistent option for snipers and machine guns since the 1960's.

When one talks about the Bundy Family, the first thing that springs to mind is the standoff in Nevada in 2014. However, perhaps even more important is the standoff and occupation at Oregon’s Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in 2016. Indeed, the two events are often conflated because Ammon Bundy is the son of Cliven Bundy, the man who stood up to the federal government over “grazing fees” on Bureau of Land Management land.
The occupation was a highlight for both the militia and the sovereign citizen movement as well as proponents of states’ rights. The main argument from those occupying the land is that the federal government is mandated by law to turn over the land that they manage to the individual states in which the land sits. This, they argued, was particularly true of the Bureau of Land Management, United States Forestry Service, and United States Fish and Wildlife Service land.
The 2016 Oregon standoff was over two ranchers convicted of arson on federal lands – despite the fact that the men, a father and son pair named Dwight and Steven Dwight Hammond, did not want their support.
Harney County in rural eastern Oregon is one of the largest counties in the United States by land mass, but one of the smallest when it comes to population. With a mere 7,700 people, cows outnumber humans in Harney by a factor of 14-to-1. Nearly three quarters of the land in the county is federally managed. The Malheur National Wildlife Refuge was established by then-President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908. It’s a large area of the county and surrounding area at 187,757 acres.

We feel sorry for people from other countries – if only because their traditional flags will never hold a candle to America’s. https://ammo.com/gear/flags
We have procured a selection of high-quality flags that represent several proud moments from throughout our nation’s history. Order one and honor the brave men who fought tooth and nail for our freedom! https://ammo.com/gear/flags
Flags were used as military standards long before they were flown to indicate nationality. (The age of sail beginning in the 17th century introduced the practice of flying national banners from ships.) What good would laying siege to a village in 400 BC have done, after all, if the villagers didn’t know who was providing the service?
Flags have factored prominently into American history. We owe our country’s very existence to the brave militiamen who fought beneath standards such as the Moultrie, the Gadsden, and the Bennington during the Revolutionary War. Others such as the Commodore Perry and the Gonzales represent later defining moments when Americans refused to kowtow to foreign governments.
Whether you can trace your heritage back to one of the great men who fought for our country in her early years, or simply love the quintessentially American refusal to yield to outside force, you will take pride in flying one of these high quality historic flags. They say that you should pick your battles. Now is your chance to do so quite literally!

Quite possibly the most iconic cartridge in the United States, the .45 Long Colt was developed originally as a black powder cartridge in 1872. Colt Firearms collaborated with the Union Metallic Cartridge Company to produce the cartridge. The Colt Single Action Army revolver was released just after it. In 1873, the revolver was accepted by the U.S. Army and became known as “The Peacemaker.” This cartridge became the primary ammunition for military issue sidearms.
No longer used by the military, it is still popular among hunters and sport shooters. Handgun hunters in North America use it for large game, including deer and black bear. Those who appreciate it have the ability to choose among many lever action rifles chambered in the caliber. The cartridge is also popular among many sport shooters, especially the Cowboy Action Shooters for whom adhering to the authentic historical aspect of their sport is important.
A recent boost to the popularity of the cartridge has been the release of the Taurus Judge revolver series. Defensive loads for shotgun in a .410 bore quickly lost their novelty, but ammunition manufacturers surprisingly latched onto the Judge's versatility and made personal protection ammunition available in .45 Long Colt. This cartridge has expanded the applications for the pistol, and returned attention to it as a legitimate personal-protection cartridge.
