How exactly do controlling groups maintain a hold on the mind and hearts of members who internally disagree with leaders? Elder Oaks' recent address at the Be One celebration gives us a great case study in the "bending of the soul" required to enjoy a comfortable space within the halls of Mormonism.

Brigham Young, the second Prophet of God in the LDS or Mormon Church, taught that if a white man marries a black woman, the penalty would be death on the spot. He taught that this was the irrevocable law of God.
Really.
If you are a mormon, like I was, you probably have seen racist comments like this and wondered how the mouthpiece of God could hold such reprehensible views regarding whole segments of humanity. Perhaps you have put inconsistencies like this on a shelf in your mind figuring that in the hereafter you would learn more about why God would have his Prophet teach doctrine such as this.
The answer is simpler than you think.

Lowry Nelson originally found cause to write to the First Presidency after being approached by a former schoolmate, Huber Meeks, who had been tasked with assessing the possibility of sending missionaries to Cuba.
What was the content of the report that Meeks ended up sending to the brethren and how did they respond? You might be surprised.

In the 2020 BYU Idaho Education Week Scott Woodward presented a lecture on "Defense Against The Dark Arts for LDS Teens" using references from JK Rowlings Harry Potter stories to describe 3 main attacks on faith and testimony and how to defend agains them.
The Third and final attack Woodward describes is the dark enchantment of false expectations. Using the metaphor of the Locket of Slytherin from the Harry Potter series, Woodward describes an insidious threat to the testimonies of LDS teens.
In this segment Woodward explains how having false expectations of God, the church or Prophets sets people up to abandon their testimonies when they learn disturbing things about the church or its leaders. He explains how teens must consider the possibility that they are wrong for holding such expectations and should turn to faithful sources of study and insight to keep their faith and testimonies intact.
