On May 22, 2021, Virgin Galactic's VSS Unity spaceship completed the first-ever human spaceflight from Spaceport America, New Mexico, with two pilots reaching apogee at 55.45 miles above ground. The flight is a meaningful step toward the opening of commercial space travel.

The James Webb telescope fired its onboard thrusters for nearly five minutes to complete the final postlaunch course correction to its trajectory. This mid-course correction burn inserted Webb toward its final orbit around the second Lagrange point, or L2, nearly 1 million miles away from the Earth.

The James Webb Space Telescope, the largest cosmic time machine was successfully launched on December 25. Like Hubble Space Telescope Webb will not orbit earth it will actually orbit the Sun, 1.5 million kilometers (1 million miles) away from the Earth at what is called the second Lagrange point or L2. It is now voyaging towards this L2 orbit. But why NASA wants to put this telescope in L2 orbit?

Blue Origin’s NS-15 New Shepard flight is targeting liftoff Wednesday, April 14, from Launch Site One in West Texas. Building on the incremental mission successes for the vehicle over the course of the program’s flight history, NS-15 is a verification step prior to flying astronauts. Additional astronaut operational exercises will also be conducted in preparation for human flight.

On June 7, 2021, NASA’s Juno spacecraft made its close flyby of Jupiter's moon Ganymede (largest moon of the solar system). For this animation, JunoCam images were orthographically projected onto a digital sphere and used to create the flyby. Synthetic frames were added to provide views of approach and departure.

Explore how the extreme gravity of two orbiting supermassive black holes distorts our view. In this visualization, disks of bright, hot, churning gas encircle both black holes, shown in red and blue to better track the light source. The red disk orbits the larger black hole, which weighs 200 million times the mass of our Sun, while its smaller blue companion weighs half as much. Zooming into each black hole reveals multiple, increasingly warped images of its partner. Watch to learn more.

Telescopes from across the globe have teamed up to take unprecedented images of supermassive black hole M87* as it blasts matter into space at 99 percent the speed of light.
This is the same famous black hole that was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope and unveiled in 2019.
