Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common cause of anemia worldwide. Iron deficiency anemia starts as normocytic (normal MCV), and then become microcytic (low MCV). Iron absorption occurs mainly in the duodenum, just after passing through the stomach and its hydrochloric acid (HCl). There are 4 main subtypes of microcytic anemia:- 1) iron deficiency anemia (IDA) 2) anemia of chronic disease (ACD) 3) sideroblastic anemia 4) thalassemia.
