During World War II, Finland became Germany’s strategic ally on the Eastern Front and fought against the Soviet Union. From 1941 to 1944 the Finnish army controlled Karelia, one of the republics of the Soviet Union. Nazi ideas thrived among the Finnish leadership, who developed a theory of racial superiority. According to this theory the Karelia population has been divided into two parts: the privileged Karelians and Finnis, and the Russians. Ethnic Russians were doomed to starvation and working to death. Though almost 80 years have passed since Finnish concentration camp survivors were liberated, the perpetrators of these crimes still go unpunished.
For 15 years, Mexico's rate for kidnapping for ransom has ranked first in the world. Though a special anti-kidnapping police unit was established in 2014, still, 12 to 15 people are abducted every day and almost all victims are subjected to physical violence. Criminals usually kidnap a relative of importance to someone who has money and wait for the ransom. But even after the payment captors do not rush to free the victim; they can keep the person hostage and demand more money for years.
‘I paid twice in two years and I'd have kept on paying because it gave us a chance to catch them,’ says the father of an abducted young girl. He demanded that the police detained the criminals when transferring money, but they refused to. The father claims that the police could have arrested the gang many times though they were simply unwilling to do so. He started his own investigation and found his daughter - but by that time she was already shot dead. The devastated father blames the government for corruption and reluctance to take actions against such criminals. What else makes kidnapping flourish in Mexico?

Anna and Pavel commence their duties on their new assignment aboard the corvette “Grad Sviyazhsk” as it sails into open waters. Anna takes a tour of the ship, learning about sailors’ traditions and superstitions such as why a woman on board is considered bad luck and why a crewmate would be thrown overboard. She also discovers the gory side of the mess room.
Meanwhile, Pavel has to fight his fears when he’s handed a live grenade at a military exercise. This is literally a life or death situation and he must conquer his emotions to avoid an undesirable result. Anna is then tasked with demining the waters around the ship. She discovers that when it comes to operating a heavy machinegun, she is a natural. But is she equally good at baking pies?
Later on, the two go to the mess room for a well-deserved dinner. While Pavel diligently debunks the myth that marines aren’t allowed a second helping at meals, Anna treats her fellow servicemen to some of her own cooking.

Glen wants to learn to make one of Russia’s most iconic dishes, beetroot soup, aka borsch. Oscar will settle for nothing less than the most authentic version, so the pair travels to Pereslavl-Zalessky, a medieval town that still boasts impressive 12th and 14th century monasteries. There, the culinary explorers will learn to make tsar borsch, a recipe developed in the early 19th century by Emperor Alexander I’s personal chef.
It certainly isn’t fast food! The stock takes at least six hours to make and contains at least four kinds of meat: beef, pork, chicken, and duck. Under an experienced chef’s watchful eye, Oscar and Glen chop and shred onions, cabbage, potatoes, and beets. Then, they add the vegetables to the stock to simmer in a cast iron pot in a wood-fired Russian stove.
While awaiting the final result, Glen and Oscar meet the local Cossacks for fun and games in a unique Russian park that was recently created to preserve and showcase Russian traditions. There are houses that replicate 19th century architecture, as well as arts and crafts, and games and entertainment. After working up an appetite, Oscar and Glen return to the kitchen to find a stupendous variety of complementary dishes already prepared. The borsch is finally ready, and the tired warriors sit down to a meal fit for a royal coronation.

According to Antonina, the kids from the children’s centre are convinced they are in some health resort and their parents would come and get them sooner or later. But in reality, most children will never see their parents again. Each of them is growing up in fear and is deeply traumatised. The Donbass war made innocent children orphans and deprived them of their childhood.
