According to traditional Islamic beliefs, the Quran was revealed to Muhammad, starting one night during the month of Ramadan in 610 AD, when he, at the age of forty, received the first revelation from the angel Gabriel, who had given him the responsibility for inscribing these messages from God to give to mankind. The Cairo Quran (1924), as it is known in the present, was first compiled into book format by Zayd ibn Thabit and other scribes under the third caliph Uthman (r. 644–56). For this reason, the Quran as it exists today is also known as the Uthmanic codex.
In this part, we have discussed traditional Muslim narratives (mainly Sunni) about Quran. New Quranic scripts, which are found around the world, give precious information about present-day Quran (Cario Quran: 1924). Historians around the world are coming to an understanding which is different from the traditional Sunni Muslim narrative. Traditional Sunni Muslim narratives are continually facing the challenge due to a few recent findings regarding the Quran. There is a possibility that Shia narrative may have some reality. These old Qurans may have difference than Modern day Cario Quran. These new findings will be discussed in the next part of our series.
Quranic Manuscript which will be discussed during our series are: 1. Sana'a palimpsest (also Ṣanʿā’ 1 or DAM 01-27.1), 2. codex Parisino-petropolitanus 3. BnF Arabe 328(c) and Birmingham fragment 4. Tübingen fragment 5. Kufic manuscripts (Topkapi manuscript and the Samarkand Kufic Quran).
Along with this we will also discuss about the development of Arabic language.
