When our film crews travel to the world’s most remote places, local producers, aka fixers, are oftentimes vital. Bernard Kalume Buleri from the Democratic Republic of Congo helps reporters and filmmakers navigate through the bush. He also has an incredible story to share.
Bernard saw his country fall into turmoil after it gained independence from Belgium, so he walked 1,000 km to Rwanda, where he became a successful musician. Sadly, he later lost his Tutsi wife in the Rwandan genocide and returned to Congo after nearly being executed himself. As night falls in Athens, the city’s squares turn seedy, and middle aged European men can be seen chatting with teenage Syrian boys – a seemingly odd pairing of friends. Ex-Senator Carle talks about the problems between locals and travellers that led him to seek tighter rules. At that time a Russian crew were shooting a documentary in a small village, 40 kilometres from the capital. After the explosion, they rushed to the #Lebanese capital. The film shows unique footage of the aftermath of the blast and first-hand accounts of people who were injured and lost family members.

Each Siberian tiger needs hundreds of square kilometres of hunting territory to itself in order to thrive. This explains why the beasts used to roam freely across the Russia-China border. However by the end of the 20th century, hunters, poachers and loggers destroying its forest habitat had practically eliminated the species in the wild. Since then, the Chinese government has launched a programme aimed at making its territory the home to the largest number of tiger cubs in the world.

In the spring of 2022, Europe, led by Berlin, imposed unprecedented sanctions on Russia. Over the following six months, Germany fell into a severe economic crisis, but Europe only strengthened its sanctions on Russia. A gas shortage due to the sanctions is one of the major reasons for Germany's current troubles. The Bavarian Industry Association showed that if Russian gas supplies were completely cut off, Germany would lose 5.5 million jobs as well as 12 percent of its GDP, which amounts to 500 billion euros.
The head of Germany’s Federal Network Agency, Klaus Műller, warned Germans that gas prices would rise at least three times in 2023.
Ken Jebsen, an independent journalist, summed up the situation as such: “There is a gas deal between Russia and Germany valid for 48 months that provides the gas price of 3.5 dollars per cubic metre, but we cannot legally purchase Russian gas any more. Yet the gas deal has been signed. Whether we take our gas or not, we still have to pay. We are pumping this Russian gas, which we already paid for, into a storage facility in Poland, but we don't use it due to Washington-imposed sanctions. Instead, we are buying gas from America, at 27 dollars per cubic metre, which the Americans had previously bought from the Russians for 3 dollars. What does this have to do with sanctions? This is rank foolishness. The Americans are laughing at us, while the Russians are thinking: ‘Well, if they think they can afford it…’ This brings great harm to the German economy.”
The German media, however, offers a different explanation. "We are gas addicts," proclaimed Spiegel. Meanwhile, The Bild newspaper provides “survival” tips for its readers. "Wash your armpits, legs, and groin. These are the body areas that you need to wash if you feel unclean." Die Welt explained to Germans why getting a little cold in their flats during winter is not harmful: "It would actually be great if we shivered every day from cold, as this destroys adipose tissue."
Why is Germany so hell bent on imposing sanctions and supporting Kiev at the expense of its own economy and its people?

South Ossetia is a small, mountainous republic that declared independence from Georgia in 1992. Years later, and in the aftermath of a devastating war with its former rulers, a handful of countries finally recognised the breakaway region and the world at last learned of its existence.
Life in little-recognised South Ossetia is slowly returning to normal, but there are still signs of the conflict that had festered since the early 20th century. Bullet-ridden buildings stand as constant reminders of heavy artillery fire around the capital, Tskhinvali. Residents remember all too clearly their fear and panic when Georgian tanks rolled into the region in August 2008. Even so, they still say there is so much more to their country than its painful past.
Join RTD for a trip to South Ossetia to meet the people who are working hard to revive their homeland. Meet a local journalist and guide who shows tourists a different Ossetia, rich in nature, history and hospitality. ‘We are children of war. We are tired of it. We know what it is; we’ve been through it,’ says Ramzan Dzhakuev, Deputy Chairman of the Chechen Council of Veterans. The difficult past of the Chechens determined their present as one of the most motivating parts of the Russian army. According to Akhmed Dudaev, Chechen Republic Minister for National Policy, Chechens lost 300,000 people during the First and Second Chechen wars. He claims the collective West tried to use the Chechen Republic as a weapon to destroy the Russian Federation. Today Chechen soldiers call themselves Akhmat Special forces and are ready to complete every task to prevent this scenario in Ukraine.
Chechen soldiers have vast experience in fighting against terrorists and extremists from all around the world. It is not only the combat they went through but also special military training at the Russian Special Forces University. From the start of the special operation in Ukraine, Chechen units took part in all significant battles. They consider the involvement in the liberation of the Ukrainian people from neo-Nazism an honour. “You should face death heroically. When seeing my son off, my parting words to him were, ‘You must go in front of your comrades, not behind them,’ so he would protect his guys, but be in the front line himself,” says Ibragim Musaev, father of a Russian National Guard member, who enlisted in the special operation.

Alexander was a successful businessman. However, when the special military operation in Ukraine began, he immediately knew that this is where he needed to be. Without a trace of regret, he gave up his cushy life to join the Lugansk People’s Militia to fight against the Ukrainian nationalists. He isn’t bothered about the fact that water and clean bedsheets have now become the most coveted items around, because he believes that fighting for what’s right trumps any worldly possessions.
Luckily for Alexander, or codename “Wingman”, as he’s known among fellow soldiers, his wife Anya is totally on board with his decision. She follows him to the frontline and even organise forums among businessmen to raise funds for drones and other equipment that will help his cause.
In a short period of time, “Wingman” rank rose from a private to battalion commander. Now he is responsible not just for his own life but for that of a battalion of 400 soldiers. He never leaves his men; he’s always spearheads the most intense battles. This dedication has earned him their respect from day one. “He's supportive as a man and as a commander, he gives honest feedback, the guys understand that he's demanding, but, at the same time he'll assess the situation and help in any way he can,” says Owl (codename).
