Need some wall paneling ideas? Well, here’s one of many historic wall finishes to serve as an inspiration. These DIY wall panels would add a touch of character, something beautifully unique, to any home just as they have done for centuries. Making wooden wall panels can be a pleasant weekend task for the average home owner.
Wood paneling for interior walls adds a touch of class that can’t be matched by the pressboard imitations one finds at the big box stores. The insulation properties of one inch planks adds yet another benefit.
Hand planing beads is a challenge. It takes a bit of work. How long does it take to hand plane these boards? Using poplar or pine, it can go surprisingly quickly. Enough boards can be planed entirely by hand in a single day to cover the walls of a moderate sized room. Purchasing the lumber from a local sawmill would likely save money compared to the cheap but expensive materials available on the public market.
Wainscoting is of ancient origin and has been a fixture in early American woodworking since the beginning. Long may it last!

Restoring an old family home involves more than simply repairing plaster, patching floors, and other mechanical work. It is of equal importance to preserve the legacy of our ancestors in the form of old photos, stories, and moveable property. Join us as we open my great great grandmother’s trunk, finding priceless(to me) artifacts that have remained virtually untouched since her death in 1921.

A quick #shorts demonstration of one method for reading otherwise illegible gravestones. If you use this method, BE GENTLE! Gravestones are priceless historic artifacts in and of themselves and should be respected.

The fence bordering the Hagerstown Pike was not a pleasant place to be on the morning of September the 17th, 1862. Unfortunately, the fence that stands there today is just like every other mass produced fence everywhere else in the country. It lacks the character of a true 19th Century fence.
My objective is to recreate the infamous fence on my own property. No one has split a fence rail or hewn a fence post here for at least a hundred years but I have no doubt that it was a common activity for my ancestors here in the past. Several of my relatives would have seen the fence at Sharpsburg during or immediately after the battle while the dead still lay beside it. One was born here. Another was a frequent visitor, elder brother of my great great grandfather who built the house I now call home. I can only imagine the terror he felt as his regiment retreated past this fence on that September morning.

The first settlers in any area on the American continent relied on land grants for legal title to ground. These grants were often marked by trees, stones, and natural landmarks. Here, we go off in search of the stone marker which provided a clear boundary line for our 1724 “plantation”.
How did we lose valuable portions of the property over the course of the 19th Century? There is a lesson here on this formerly rich, now overgrown land that supported a family for generations.

Another #shorts. Misplaced my mic so longer presentations are on hold for now. How to make lime from sea shells: a simple lime mortar can be made using just a wood stove and burning oyster shells. Incidentally, is also how to make a natural plaster. A lime putty is the result following a burn of about three or four hours at a high temperature and soaking in water for a bit. Making a lime mortar is not only historically accurate but exceptionally satisfying. It is an easy process. Ridiculously easy.
Come spring, on this channel, we’ll be going into great, dare we say, exhaustive, detail on the fascinating subject of historic mortars and cements. To see a lime kiln in action, be sure to subscribe!
