Since I pulled out my vintage Shure 55 a few weeks ago for the microphone comparison, I thought I'd take a closer look at it.
The Shure 55 was one of the most iconic microphones ever designed. As they said in their advertising, it's been "photographed with the most celebrities of any microphone".
Or at least it was until their newer SM58 took over that honour.
Welcome back to the ever-popular Mailbag Monday.
Today, in addition to a few interesting and useful goodies from the slow boat, I have a couple of donations from some of my generous viewers.
Thanks Mark and Adam. Those are going to be interesting to play with in the future.

My wife got me a beer fridge for Christmas this year, and as part of my "calibrating" the thermostat to the perfect temperature, I decided to build a temperature monitor for the fridge.
Of course there are other ways to do this, but I had the parts available, so why not?
Here's the DHT12 library I used:

And here's a link to the ugly code I slapped together out of bits and pieces from some example code (don't laugh - I never claimed to have any skill at coding):

This is a quick diagnosis and repair (and curiosity teardown while I'm at it) of a flashing LED safety thing a friend-of-a-friend asked me to try and fix.
Turned out to be one of the most common types of failure and a very easy repair

A couple of weeks ago I got this cheap little USB rechargeable flashlight.
On my initial look a it, the charging didn't seem to be working.
Time to tear it apart and find out what's going on inside.
Here's where the flash light came from: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Mini-USB-Rechargeable-LED-Light-Flashlight-Lamp-Pocket-Keychain-Torch-Waterproof/362625362910 (it was cheaper when I bought it, though...)

I don't think I'll make a habit of doing teardown videos, unless you guys actually find it worth your time to watch.

Now that I have better lights above my workbench, I guess it's time to find a permanent way to power them.
This is me experimenting with a few options, and after some failures and some waffling back-n-forth, I finally settled on something that I probably should have just done in the first place.
Here's the video about making the lights: https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=mSAFJlxWWmE
