DOOM | Plutonia MIDI Pack - Tower Of Fire [Cover By DAR] - MAP08
A nice and slow one to groove to, compared to the last couple of Plutonia tracks!
At first, I had thought about going for a more "acoustic" sound on this one, mainly because of the harp. However, I was tempted by my synths, and then I also thought back to my "Jade Empire" (MAP03) cover. From there on out, I wanted to try and go for a sort of retrowave/synthwave sound. Didn't quite get the sound I had set off to find, but I quite like where things ended up.
I also got to use a nice free sample library of an instrument called a "kantele". Found this set sometime last year while expanding my acoustic/world-instrument soundfont/sample collection for use with another project. Never had a good opportunity to use it until now, mainly because of its very limited range. Using it in combination with a harp sounded great! The kantele is the one that sounds slightly dissonant/out-of-tune. Those two together, piped through a reverb-send just felt so right for this track!
Speaking of piping stuff through some reverb, the sad cello returns! Originally, I had wanted to try using my violin and pitching-shifting down an octave. However, things didn't quite sound right. Not sure if I need to try recording at higher samplerates, and/or try going plugged in, rather than mic'd up. In any case, I used what I did for the "Watch Your Rock" cover. I took my favorite violin soundfont, and after recording playback, I went and pitch-shifted down an octave.
Playing the bass and guitar riff parts were also a lot of fun! Which is a surprise, since I had to tune my Ibanez down to B Standard (bass got to stay in Drop D, thankfully). Low-tension spaghetti-strings weren't a problem this time around while recording the rhythm and lead guitar parts. One of these days though, I'm gonna add a nice baritone or 7-string to my arsenal of instruments over here!
Anyhow, the way the new lead part came about was actually pretty funny. I got stuck and then after plucking the first note, I just started tapping around. Liked what I was playing and just rolled with it. I think that the tapped sound really lent itself well to the feel of this track, as well as that section.
Aside from the new leads (2:48), I tried to stay close to the original. Only thing I had changed was cutting the "bass solo" (2:15) in half. Originally it had played the same thing a second time, but I felt like I wanted to jump back in with the guitar and other synths a bit sooner. That and I wound up changing a part in the bass solo. While practicing it, I had goofed up and wound up doing a hammer-on and pull-off that sounded really cool, so I kept it.

So, here we are, you guys. Today is a joyous, yet somewhat sad kind of day, bittersweet I guess you could say. The end of my third DOOM Marathon. Let us all take a fond look back at the "journey" up to this point, from the announcement to this cover =).
This one is definitely one of my absolute favorites in the soundtrack! After beating map01 and upon entering the intermission screen, I was just in awe right from the first beat of the song. I absolutely knew I needed to save this one for the grand finale.
I was also quite nervous working on this one, since I know I'm not the only one that really loves this track! Throughout the whole marathon I kept thinking about this one, and wasn't sure how I would handle covering it. Though, after completing all the tracks that came before it, I was finally in the right sort of mindset to work on this one.
As I worked on this, I really wanted to focus on that bittersweet feeling I had mentioned earlier. I wanted to capture the melancholic sound the original had, yet I also wanted to add this powerful, hopeful emotion to it.
Originally, I was thinking of using some guitars, and having a "heavy" finish, but using guitars for this one just didn't quite sound right to me. I guess once you go full orchestral, there's no going back, huh?
I really, really enjoyed playing the piano for this one. I followed along with the original for the first minute, then when things started to kick in, I just sort of went with the flow and improvised the melody from thereon out.
I'm also quite proud of the way this one sounds. I think this is probably my most "movie-soundtrack-sounding" work I've ever done yet!
I also enjoyed putting the video together. I decided to do what I had done for the DOOM 2 Marathon finale, editing together all the previous covers from the marathon. Except this time, I decided to do something a bit different, since this channel has more than doubled in size since those days. I included a lot of your lovely comments posted throughout this marathon! There's a lot of new faces to go alongside with the old now. My apologies if your comment didn't make it into the video, I tried fitting as many as I could.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy this finale! I'll be focusing mainly on some non-Doom stuff for the rest of this month, before I take on the very large, "Plutonia MIDI Pack"!

If there was any work of mine that was in dire need of a remake, it would have to be this channel's very first upload. I think I've come a very long ways over the last five years. I am very proud to see how far everything has gone since that first cover!
My first rendition of this was VERY rough around the edges, with footage recorded from a cheap webcam, and pretty sub-par mixing compared to all that would later follow. However, despite its roughness, I've always been very proud of how everything sounded from a musical standpoint. This was such a fun jam for me all those years ago, but I just felt bad that the video and audio quality kind of dragged things down.
I've been thinking of remaking this one for a very very long time. I think it was back in 2017 or 2018, I decided that I would save this for the 5-Year anniversary. Of course, I still planned to do other Zelda covers for the 3rd and 4th anniversary, but in the end, I wound up being busy with other things and wasn't able to.
I wanted to do something special for the 5-Year anniversary for my first two albums too but I was busy working on covers. This cover however, after years of planning for this, I just could not let this opportunity pass by!
With this upload, this rendition captures EXACTLY the tone and energy I had envisioned all those years ago. Also, bit of a disclosure, but all leads AND rhythm guitar parts were recorded with my Ibanez. I decided to use the Strat in the video as a throwback and for some visual variety.
At first, I was just going to make this a 1:1 remake of the first version I had done. However, as I proceeded to jam out and record, that quickly changed. I really had myself some fun with the bass guitar in this cover. Since back then, all I used was a VSTi-bass, and the part was real simple, just playing root notes. Now having my bass guitar for nearly 4 years, I felt like I was able to inject more life into the bass parts for this cover.
I also articulated the rhythm guitar tracks better this time around in some parts (whereas before it was just constant power chords and chugging). Also really had fun chugging along for the part at 3:21. Had even more fun with the leads that kick back in after that too! I've also added on a nice little "fast" solo to follow after the tapping part.
Next up, I decided to add some lead harmonies for the final stretch. Those harmonies really add a bit of extra "flavor" in my opinion. I also resisted the urge to fade out, like I had done in the original. I always try and make a conscious effort to not play into a fade out. It wasn't until after my Into Sandy's City cover that I made an effort to break that habit (shoutout to efirehawk, your message back then really set me straight! Thanks man.).
It's a bit of a late start into 2020 for the covers channel, but man, I think this is a great first cover for 2020! Hope you all enjoy the video!

At last, this little apocalyptic/dystopian short-story ends on a high note! A two-parter finale!

With the majority of mankind freed from the machine, the commander of the uprising gives an uplifting & rousing speech as they prepare to liberate the final stronghold.
Got really into the vibe and short-story that Solitude Of Mind was telling. I really wanted to have a buildup/hype sort of song to precede Change Destiny. After doing those new string sections in Subterfuge, I really wanted to follow up on that.
I envisioned some grand speech taking place before Change Destiny hits. I laid out my strings and actually wrote up a speech to fully get myself immersed and in the right mindset. Then for fun, I decided to go yell it all into a microphone and threw it into the project.
I wound up throwing on a bunch of effects on my voice in order to give it this sense of being played on loudspeakers out to this absolutely massive crowd. The voice may not be super clear, but its not supposed to be. I wanted "Rally Cry" to really give off a feel and vibe about it. To where, you don't necessarily need to understand all the words to get the gist of things. That being said though, I've included the words in the video, for those curious as to what Commander (not)DAR is yelling about over there.
On to the technicals for Rally Cry. Its at the same 144bpm tempo as Change Destiny. The clean strumming on my Strat was an idea derived from the clean intro riff of Change Destiny. I was going to try and have more parts, but decided to just stick with only the strumming bits. I also wound up using some synths to fill in the bottom-end. Sine waves in particular in order to get some bass and sub-bass, since the strings were lacking that thickness and weight.
Now for Change Destiny! This one had always been my favorite track on SoM, so it was tough trying to change things up for it. I wound up slightly changing what the rhythm plays during the intro. I also gave the bass something to do, and even made up a new clean lead part to join in on the action! I also added some synth stuff to contribute to the ambience and atmosphere in the intro.
Probably the most noticeable change/addition is the inclusion of a new lead harmony that joins during the choruses. I also kept in one of the original lead recordings towards the end. Mixed it in right alongside the newly recorded leads. I also decided to go a bit heavier on the reverb and delay aux channels for the leads. I wanted to have a more spacey sort of feel to the leads on this one.
Anyhow, I hope you all enjoy the finale, and have enjoyed this remake of Solitude Of Mind! Also going to be focusing on composing "The Eternal Sky" for the majority of this month, probably. ~DAR

Hey all, I'm back with more TNT! (pun intended)
So, originally I was going to use my acoustic for this one, but I just couldn't get it to sound right. Instead, I wound up using my bass and tried to follow the original for about the first couple of minutes or so. At that point, I really got the feeling like the song should be building up to some serious crunch. So I made up some heavy riffs to go along with the idea! I especially had fun with the part starting at 3:36!

So, this one turned out to be quite interesting to work on.
I had decided to approach this one with a different mindset. Rather than tackling this one strictly with DOOM in mind, I instead treated it as if it were more like one of my originals (like if there were a "HORIZONS II" album or something).
It was mainly the melody starting at 1:22 that made me shift my focus on how I'd handle this cover. I really enjoyed how it sounded in the original, but was disappointed that it was just over too fast. So I wound up extending it, adding some guitars into the mix as well. I was also happy that I got to use my Stratocaster a bit more for this one (for the rhythm parts at 1:37 and 3:33).
The echoey drums also really gave me this "floating in space" sort of feeling. Along with the name, "Horizon" I started to think back on my "HORIZONS" album. So like I said earlier, that's why I treated it as if it were a track from a hypothetical, "HORIZONS II" album.
To add a soothing, shining quality to the track, I had swapped out the original's cello (or was it an oboe?) instead with a piano. Along with some choirs to go alongside it, it was very relaxing to work on (I actually fell asleep a couple of times!).
I also decided to use more "flycam" shots, for the video. Not only to go along with that "floaty/flying" feeling I got from this one, but in preparation for the impending climax of the TNT Marathon. I've decided that I'm going to take on the last five remaining tracks all in a row.
Yeah, that's right. Its time to RIP. AND. TEAR. Until it is Done.
Also, I want to give special thanks to Thomas, for bringing "Final Doomer" to my attention! Even though he suggested it for when I do the Plutonia MIDI Pack, I felt like now would be a good time to use the TNT Evilution set for this final stretch of the TNT Marathon!

Slight detour, as I really really wanted to cover/extend this. It was one of those situations where upon hearing the original, I immediately could hear the new riffs in my head. Also, this one technically has the honor of being the channel's first commission! Many thanks goes out to Niko for requesting and sponsoring this one! I very much enjoyed jamming out to this one \m/!
For those unaware, the original "Decisive Dance" was basically a 10-second loop. Ironically enough, the last song that I had extended like this was also a Spidey cover (Waterfront Warehouse)! While looking into the song, I wound up discovering that the Genesis version had basically combined it with "Heated Battle" as well. The two just fit so well together, I just HAD to throw in Heated Battle in the beginning and end of the cover!
When coming up with all the new riffs, I made sure to try my best to stay faithful to the mood and feeling of the original.
I'm actually a few days late on this one, had a lot happen this past week: discovering the perfect guitar pick (never knew I needed the Jazz III picks in my life 'til now), experiments with soldering and electronics, and even a case of food poisoning. Its certainly been an adventurous week. Took me a little longer too, since originally I had estimated that the cover would only be slightly over 3 minutes, and instead it wound up becoming 7 and a half minutes!
So picking apart things I had done for this cover, something else that wound up being time consuming was that I decided to go nuts with the synths. After mapping out the notes in MIDI, I wound up rendering out 11 different sounds/synth-patches. From there, I went and layered them all together. Quite happy with how the synths turned out, both the main background synth, as well as the lead synth for the "Heated Battle" parts.
Speaking of "Heated Battle", its been forever (ok, so since a little before this time last year) since I got to use one of my guitar slides! As I listened to the synth in the original, I immediately thought, "oh this would sound awesome with a slide!" and so I busted out my wonderful chrome slide. Which actually surprised me, since my glass slide had always been my favorite to use for recording. Thinking back on it, the last time the chrome one had gotten some love was back on Hypernova from my HORIZONS album! Really loved how the synth and slide-guitar combination sounded (0:47, 6:37).
As for the rest of the leads, I'll keep things short, since I could spend forever typing about each of the new riffs. I had so much damn fun noodling and riffing around on this one. Its always a wonderful feeling when a song/cover just really meshes and gels well with my playing. My new favorite pick certainly made things even more fun too (feels like I'm effortlessly gliding across the strings). One lead part I particularly liked was when I did the tremolo-picking at 4:17 (also really liked playing the groovy section before it). During the trem-picking, giving a boost to my Reverb and Delay Sends/aux-channels had really nailed the sound and tone that I had in my head.
Lastly, something that I did a little differently on this cover was sending my bass track off to an aux-channel, and throwing on an EQ (to roll off everything below ~500hz), and a tubescreamer. The distortion isn't particularly aggressive, but I felt like it helped the bass stand out a bit better.

Man, this is probably the DUMBEST thing I've made yet on the channel... and I loved every second of it!! Happy Halloween everybody!
I've been wanting to do a holiday special for a long time now. I didn't get to do one last year because "car fun" happened around then. Then the year before that, I was busy completing the first RED PLANET album.
I thought of doing a Silent Hill cover or a horror movie parody, but I wasn't sure if I'd be able to finish either in time. Then I started thinking, "Why don't I just do the Spooky Scary Skeletons song?". I felt like being silly and the song itself was fairly short, so I thought "Sure, why the hell not?".
I decided to do a silly fake-stage sort of setup. I also put on my best frontman/singer act as well. Doing every cheesy thing I could think of, like pointing to the "crowd", the "wave", jumping and dancing around, etc. It was honestly really exhausting, but man it was stupid fun just goofing off like this!
Anyways, I hope you all get a laugh out of this, and once again, Happy Halloween =)! ~DAR

Another entry to the Subscriber Event! Shoutout and thanks goes out to longtime subscriber: 6usfsd adsfe, for suggesting this song during the event.
Apologies for how long this took to get out, I seriously needed a nice break after that Infinite Sky cover! Because of that, I wound up sitting on this one for way longer than I should have.
I was unsure about this one since I wound up deviating a bit from the original's more subdued energy. Originally, I was going to follow this very closely, but I wound up really liking how my double-tapped part came out. After the tapping shenanigans, I decided at that point that I'd go for this electronic rock kind of sound. I also had a tricky time trying to figure out what to do with my rhythm-guitar tracks... all was good though after I ran them through a gated filter!
For a while, I was trying to think of what was missing during the choir parts. When I finally sat back down to finish this, I decided to try throwing in some strings. I felt like this addition layered underneath the choirs gave things more impact, and made it sound a bit more grand.
Other than all that, I went back and referenced how I got certain sounds for my previous Metroid cover. Also, as simple as it was, I quite enjoyed making the heartbeat sound. Past the intro, I wound up also using the heartbeat in other spots (for dramatic effect!).
