Does it really matter which type/brand of Thermal Compound (Paste) you will use? Well, as it seems, it does matter, and it can make quite a difference under high loads.
Since heat is transferred through the thermal paste that we will use, it is no brainer that it affects the operating temperatures. If you don’t use enough amount or the thermal paste is of low quality, the contact won’t be optimal so the operating temperatures won’t be as low as possible. Moreover, some thermal pastes age faster than others, so you have to frequently replace them, while some other thermal pasters are ideal for below zero applications, referring to hard-core overclockers using LN2. Such thermal pastes do not address the average Joe, so I won’t deal with them in today’s video.
We put the following thermal compounds to the test to see how they compare against the new Arctic Cooling MX-5.
• Thermal Grizzly Hydronaut
• Arctic Cooling MX-4
• Noctua NT-H1
• Prolimatech PK-1
?? Testing Methodology ??
As a testing vehicle, I use my Jalapeno heat sink loader, which can apply a fully adjustable and super-steady load in every heat sink or cooler. For this occasion, I chose a load of 500W and the cooler that I installed on Jalapeno, is an NZXT Kraken Z73. So I have a steady load, the same cooler and the only thing that changes is the thermal paste between the cooler’s block and Jalapeno’s base.
