“sphragizo” (G4971), translates “to set a mark upon.” The King James uses this word 27 times. The one spot where Christians are most familiar with it’s usage is Ephesians 1:13, which reads, “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were SEALED with that holy Spirit of promise,..”. Most have taken this word to mean that the Holy Spirit lives within everyone who believes in Jesus Christ, but there is a problem with this thought process.
“And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.”
Acts 19:1-6 KJV (I kept to the King James to keep things consistent).
In reading the above passage, there is a distinction between believing and receiving - you can’t miss it.
Does this mean that I’m not saved if I truly don’t have the Holy Spirit in me?
No, you are saved, but God, in the form of the Holy Spirit doesn’t live IN you...yet (He will, if you ask for THE GIFT AND allow Him in).
Ok, but I’m saved and have been this long without Him, so what’s the big deal?
Well...nothing, unless you subscribe to a pre-tribulation rapture.
““For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until HE (the restrainer) be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:”
2 Thessalonians 2:7-8 KJV
“The restrainer” has long been interpreted as meaning the Holy Spirit.
Pre-tribulation Christians believe that the 2 Thessalonians passage means that Jesus will take the church, thus, the Holy Spirit (the restrainer), and with that, all the Christians.
But if this is the case and the Acts 19:1-6 passage is true, that means that there will be a lot of Christians left to endure the tribulation.
Something to consider.
