Sam Seder and Emma Vigeland talk about the Covid-19 vaccine and Covid-19 variants with infectious disease specialist Dr. MarkAlain Déry. In this segment, Sam Seder begins by asking Dr. Déry if the U.S.’s strategy of implementing double-dose vaccination plans seems to have worked out better than starting with single-dose vaccinations before giving everyone a second shot. Sam also asks about “herd immunity,” something which Dr. Déry does not think the U.S. will have, at least not in our lifetimes. Herd immunity would require an estimated 70% of the population to be vaccinated. Vaccine hesitancy, or resistance to getting the vaccine for any number of reasons, is currently playing a large role in lowering the number of people who are getting vaccinated. There’s also the question of how well the vaccines we have now protect us from Covid-19 variants and how well the vaccine is being rolled out throughout different communities across the country.
